CONFEDERATE 9 POUNDER CANNONBALL, 1st.ORDNANCE/ARMORY BATTALION, RICHMOND, 1861:
$185.00

This has to be the most unusual Civil War artifact I have ever seen! It isa Westham Foundry of Richmond, Virginia Revolutionary War 9 pounder cannonball fromthe 1st. Battalion, Ordnance/Armory Battalion in Richmond, Virginia. Westham Foundrycannonballs are rather unique as they appear to be sort of striped but this isactually where several small ladles were used to fill the mold, slightly beingcooled between pours Accordingto the family letter from Private Charles Godall of Company A, 1st.Battalion, Ordnance/Armory Battalion, they had an old British 9 pounder ironcannon on a naval carriage that wassurrendered at Yorktown in October, 1781 in the armory. Private Godall & several armory personalwere assigned to rebuild an old War of 1812 carriage that was in goodcondition & use the iron cap squares & other iron parts from the navalcarriage. Theyhad about a hundred old 9 pounders cannonballs from the Westham Foundry inRichmond, all from the Revolutionary War to go with the cannon. They cleaned& restored the cannon barrel & the cannonballs & mounted the barrelon the repaired carriage. Their duty was to man the cannon if Richmondwas attacked which they did in 1862 & 1864/65. WhenRichmond was abandoned in April 1865, Godall went with the battalion, headedwest & were captured at Sayler’s Creek/Sailor’s Creek on April 6, 1865. Noone knows what ever happened to the old cannon & its cannonballs. This cannonball is in goodcondition with the mold seam around the middle roughly ground off with lightpits & has a dark brown patina. It was bought directly from the Godall family & comes with a familyletter, a certificate of historical accuracy & historical research.
