Early Biedermeier Black Forest Cuckoo probably Johann Baptist Beha, circa 1850s: $750.00
For your consideration is this early Black Forest cuckoo clock in the Biedermeier style. This version of the cuckoo clock predates the now common style. The clock is very similar to the one shown on p. 37 of Rare and Unusual Black Forest Clocks by Justin J. Miller. This clock has virtually the same proportions, colors, columns, and crest as the one in the book. It may not be by Beha, but it certainly has a lot of elements to suggest that it is. Elements of the movement suggest this as well. The black, blue, and gold design with white porcelain elements is very handsome and unusual. The clock needs and deserves restoration work. The bellows need to be restored. The back panel (door) is absent. It does have a pendulum, but no weights. The bird is later and incorrect (but kind of charming anyway). The are a few missing pieces of ebonized veneer on the case. The metal bezel ring is missing and the porcelain dial has fine cracks. Finally, there is a small piece of the blue painted dial area that is damaged. There may be other issues not listed here, so please study the photographs and ask questions if you have them.Check out my other items for another early cuckoo!
