CIVIL WAR SOLDIER’S LETTER, DEC.5TH, 1862, JOSEPHC. ARNOLD, CO.E. 96TH OHIO INFANTRY
This lot comprises a four page Union Soldier’s Letterwritten from Memphis, Tennessee, on December 5, 1862. Joseph C. Arnold, of Co.E., 96th Ohio Volunteers, writes on patriotic stationery on thestate of what was probably going to be his winter quarter’s .
The letter reads, in part:”…Wemarched from Nicholasville to Lewisville and then we took the boat over. We was on it seven days, and we have been hereabout a week. We have marching orders in three days but I don’t think we willleave here for some time. …We have built fireplaces in our tents and we canlive very well. This is good land here and a very pretty country, but I don’tlike it quite as well as I do there in Ohio…I don’t think it will be very longtill I get back …”
The 96th Ohio saw more that it\'s fair share of action. It was heavily engaged at Arkansas Post, Arkansas just over a month after this letter was written. It would also see action at Vicksburg and at several places in Louisiana.
This fineletter is on fine Patriotic letterhead, is easily read and in very good condition.
Good Luck and Happy offerding !
