Fine, Fancy, matching pair of ANTIQUE PARADE tooled tapaderos (hooded stirrups) with 42 Mexican silver coins and 4 concho decorations. This is a BIG, HEAVY, handsome pair that weighs about 6 lbs. 10 oz.! These taps are about 21\" tall X about 9 1/2\" front to back, and about 6 1/2\" wide at the widest point. The outside of the tapaderos are finely and deeply carved (tooled) in a flower and scroll pattern. The right tap has 2 conchos with leather tassels, a silver engraved domed concho at the top, one large Mexican coin concho at the bottom, and 20 smaller Mexican coin conchos along the edges. The left tap has 2 conchos with leather tassels, one large Mexican coin concho at the bottom, and 19 smaller Mexican coin conchos along the edges. There are no dates visible on the coins; just the Mexican Eagle and and Estados Unidos Mexicana. The insides have typical shaped wooden stirrups that have worn black paint with worn leather coverings that are laced on the bottoms. The tops of the stirrups have a round galvanized peg attached to the insides of the wooden stirrups with a rivet through the galvanized side plates. These tapaderos look old as dirt, and probably date to around the turn of the century, about 1900. These could be earlier, with the coins added later during the period of use. This is a very unusual matching set, that has lots of Cowboy character and eye appeal. These are not Maker marked, and both are in very good overall condition with an aged untouched patina that collectors love to see. There is one silver engraved concho missing at the top of the left tap that could easily be replaced if desired. There appears to be slots for 3 additional coin conchos at the top of both tapaderos along the edges, and it appears that these were purposely removed at one time. The coins had a strip of brass soldered to the backs. The thick leather was slotted, and the brass strip was bent over on the inside. These brass tabs were hand made and are uneven is length, width and size; just like you would expect from an old Cowpoke gussyin\' them up. The inside brass has very dark natural aged patina and looks old as dirt; and the coins look like they have been on the taps for 75 - 100 years.Both taps are identical, and this is hardly noticeable and not distracting. These would have been used on a silver saddle in a Parade or Equestrian show. Perfect as a wall hanger or as a Western, Cowboy, Vaquero, Bit, Bridle, saddle, Old West, Horseman, Horse Trapping, or Equestrian display; or as a conversation piece. It is very difficult to find an old matching pair of coin decorated tooled Tapaderos in good condition.
