The Fisher 400 tube receiver is one of several highly regarded tube receiver models from the golden age of Fisher’s audio manufacturing. While the Fisher 500C gets the most attention, some actually prefer the sonics of the 400, as it has a somewhat less forward presentation and can be better suited to many modern speakers.
I have partially restored the receiver, with the following work:
1) cleaned the chassis thoroughly
2) properly cleaned the faceplate by soaking in dilute ammonia
3) cleaned all controls, switches, and tube sockets (except output tube sockets, which is not advisable) with Caig DeOxit D5 spray cleaner
4) installed new brass knob caps
5) replaced light blocking foam around dial glass
6) cleaned input jacks
7) checked operating voltages (B+. filament, bias, etc.) - they are within original factory spec
The receiver has been tested on all inputs (FM, aux/CD, and phono) and all work great with balanced output from both channels. There is also no hum, indicating that the electrolytic filter caps in the power supply are still good. Receiver is supplied with original tubes, which were all tested (tubes tested on my professionally-calibrated Hickok 539B tube tester) and found to be strong. Output tubes are a matched quad of strong-testing vintage 7868 power tubes.
Cosmetics are very good. Faceplate and dial glass is very clean, with all lettering and chassis lettering 100% intact. Transformers are clean with no scratches or rust. Original Fisher wood cabinet included. If you want further restoration work done on the amp (e.g., coupling cap replacement, new electrolytic filter capacitors) to improve future reliability, I can do that for you, too.
38 pounds before packing. Receiver dimensions are 18 X 16 X 7 inches. Shipping weight is estimated to be 44 pounds.
