A vintage French Louis XVI style Desk with matching Chair.
We are pleased to present thisbeautiful Desk that arrived here recently for your consideration. It is done in the style of a French Louis XVI piece with lots of detail andexceptional features. Although it may look much older, we think it dates to the first half of the 20th century, based on the construction details.Circa 1920 to 1940 would be our best guess.
The Desk is kidney shaped with curved fronts on allseven (7)of the spacious drawers. The back side is curved as well, and finished as nicely as the working side, so this Desk will look fine if you decide to place it someplace out in the open, away from a wall.
One of the most attractive features is the color scheme and hand painted detail. Shades of green and brown predominate, but the hand painted floral motif adds varied blue shades, with subtle flourishesin other brighter pigments, making for a vibrant and eye catching exterior. The decoration is what really makes this piece \"pop\" the way it does.
In addition to the color scheme, the curved surfaces combine with carved trim and graceful legs to achieve a fabulous decorative look. A matching chair is included, and shares the colorful hand painted detail with the Desk.
Interior construction details are impressive as well, and testify to the quality that went into the Desk and Chair. Dovetail joints are found on all the drawers, and they are constructed of solid wood. Each drawer has its own individual compartment, a sure indication of quality. Ornate brass is found on the pulls. Nothing about the construction looks cheap or done without a lot of care and thought.
The Desk measures 30-1/8 inches high, 42 inches wide, and 19 inches deep. For purposes of getting a shipping quote, we estimate its weight at 75 pounds, with another 10 pounds estimated for the chair.
Interior storage space in the Desk is supplied by seven drawers, each with a curved front. The two sides rows have a top drawer with 2-3/8 inches of usable height, with 3-3/8 inches of height available from the middle and bottom drawer. All side drawers are 6-3/4 inches wide, and have about 10-1/2 inches of usable depth.
The middle drawer also offers 2-3/8 inches of usable height, but has a much larger working space that is 15-7/8 inches wide with about 11-1/2 inches of usable depth.
The matching Chair fits perfectly in the Desk opening. That opening is 16-3/4 inches wide. The height varies from 21 inches to 25 inches, taking into account the decorative trim at the sides, just below the center drawer.
The Chair seat should be comfortable for most and is about 13-1/2 inches deep. Its width tapers larger, from 12-1/2 inches wide at the back edge, to 15-1/4 inches wide at the front edge.
Condition: Very good to excellent. There is scattered light wear to the surface finish, with occasional shallow bumps or tiny areas of paint loss, but the wear tends to complement the antique look that the Desk has. Our pictures show the actual Desk and Chair you will receive, and there wasn\'t any significant damage or issues of note. We did find a couple of the drawers to be balky sliding, but this is easily remedied and not unusual on older pieces. Theinteriors of the drawers were clean for the most part, anda quick vacuum will remove any remaining dust. The set is ready for use now, and will make a delightful additionthat will deliver years of service.
