Whatisthe Kokomo Kit?
TheKOKOMO KIT Mk3 is hydraulic spindle bearing for Garrard301 or 401 turntables. The spindleruns on a hydraulic oil film without any mechanicalcontact on the hydraulicflydisk. The result is a perfectsynergy of rotating parts. Five years of researchand development have created a bearing assembly thatbrings about vastly improved performance. Please readthe customer responses, the describes exactly the the improvement of the Kokomokit. The kokomo kit´s of the first generation canupgrade to the this flydisk technologie. TheKOKOMO BEARING KIT replaces the worn out flat top thrustplate common to nearly all Garrard 401 and some 301turntables. Worn thrust plates and bearing surfacesact like a brake and cause uneven speed regulation,Musical timbre and rhythm suffer. It is as if a veilis cast over the music. The KOKOMO KIT addresses theseproblems. Your Garrard 301 or 401 turntable will performwith even better than new performance. Musical instrumentsand vocals will snap into focus! Installation is simple. No additional parts are necessary.

FAQ:-How difficult is it to install the KOKOMO KIT on myGarrard 301/401?
Installation takes approximately10 minutes. Each KOKOMO KIT includes a manualcomplete with detailed step-by-step instructions andpictures.- Are the KOKOMO KITS for the Garrard301 and the 401 the same?
No. The platterbearing dimensions for the Model 301 and the 401 aredifferent. For the best possible performance we havedeveloped kits specific to each model.-Can I use the KOKOMO Kit on my grease bearing 301?
Yes,the KOKOMO kit works quite well with the greased platterbearing on the Garrard301. Some customers have triedbearing grease in place of our special bearing oil withgood results. Performance over the original bearingassembly is obvious. Your 301 will run quieter.-Why should I use the special bearing oil?
OurKOKOMO bearing oil is a perfect match for the thrustplate and bearing used in the KOKOMO Kit.Performanceis improved and bearing wear is reduced almost to thevanishing point. While some customers have recommendedautomotive motor oil, we advise against oil substitutionbecause of the potentially corrosive effects of theadditives used in engine oil.

Even more impressive was the blissfull silence between the tracks...
Itis well kown amongst vinyl aficionados that the quality and health of aturntables main bearing contributes greatly to ensuring that itperforms at its best. When applied to Garrard 301 and 401 decks, thisis even more important because, as our very own Noel Keywood found, this contributes greatly to the age-old rumble problems suffered bythese otherwise superb units.Of course, quite a few specialists have now cropped up that will sortthis problem out for you, including Dr. Martin bastin, whose bearingmodifications magically silenced Noels 401. Until, recently, however, there has been relatively little that the home DIY-er could do to theirown deck in this area. This has now changed, however, thanks toGermanys Analog Tube Audio.Available for both 301s and 401s, the Kokomo kit consists of a brandnew , one-piece bronze alloy thrust plate and a ceramic ball bearingthat replace the original Garrard items. The kit also includes a bottleof a special bearing oil that can be purchased separately for Euro 8,50.Using my own 301 as the test bed, I stripped out the old bearing andcleaned everything thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, before commencingfitment of the new item. The instructions are very clearly and, half anhour or so later, the job was done. The first aspect I noted was that, with the 301s brake disconnected, giving the platter a good spin sentit merrily spinning for a very long time - a good sign! These continued when spinning a few choice tunes. That fabulously deepand solid Garrard bass was still present and correct, but there was adefinite tightening of upper bass and an improvement in detail in thisarea. Altough the old Garrard could still make the walls shake ifrequired, it seemed to have gained something of a velvet glove to coverthat iron fist and was exhibiting a lightness of touch that had beenmissing previously. Even more impressive was the blissfull silence between the tracks.Obviously, poeple tend to notice an increase in noise less when theylive with them day to day and it was only hearing a 401 a few month agothat made me realise my own deck had become a little more rumbly thanit should be. With the addition of the Kokomo, however, it is quietonce more. All in all, the Analog Tube Audio Kokomo kit is a simple and easy tofit upgrade for Garrard 301 and 401 motor units that works a treat.Review on TNT-AUDIO - Kokomo Kit 301/401 from Hartmut Quaschik
...Thechange of the original Garrard bearing thrust pad against the Kokomowas done in just a few minutes. With the Kokomo I bought a bottle ofoil from Robert, so I cleaned the old bearing and removed all old oilbefore putting new oil on the axis and reassembling the whole stuff. The difference before and after was very big: Now the 401 did the 3Dthing and the soundstage was so transparent yet solid that my jawnearly hit the floor. This was much more than I expected. While it madeno Yorke from the Garrard, it was like the Garrard got so manyqualities added now, which previously had been exclusive on the Yorke(and similar turntables), that the combination of Garrard and Kokomoopened up a new quality level. Previously I thought, a Garrard would bebest with 70s rock music or large symphonic orchestras. But now, theKokomo learned the Garrard some more tricks: it can do smallerclassical combos or modern rock music a lot better than before. Nowa very important question: what about the beautiful tone of theGarrard, did it get lost? Thankfully, the tonal character in generalstayed the the same, and also the beautiful tone remained as beautifulas before. Not even a hint of audiophile leanness could be detected.Inorder to put some more light on the question: how good is the Garrardplus Kokomo combo right now, I tried another record: Choirgirl Hotel byTori Amos. Now this is really a killer record: if the frontend is notreally on top, the sound is nasty and you cannot relax. The Yorke comboshowed a whole level of more fine detail, and made more sense of thenumerous ebbs and flows. The last characteristic is due to theGarrards motor concept, and as long as the drive has not changedsubstantielly, I do not honestly expect any change. The Garrard showedjust a bit of harshness, this was quite an excellent result. I rememberwhen I had this record with me on the Hi-End show 2006 and a currentproduction Thorens turntable choked and distorted all the way.

Once everything was reassembled, I used my hand to give the plattera spin. The platter kept spinning and spinning. I stopped it, spunit again and looked at my watch. Two minutes later the platter wasstill spinning. Obviously, the new bearing had far less frictionthan the old thrust plate. With that visual confirmation that thenew bearing was far lower in friction I started to play music. Thefirst record I put on was one I had been playing a lot recently, TheWhite Stripes Elephant. A very well recorded rock album, made entirely in the analog domain. As soon as the needle hit thevinyl I know that there had been an improvement in the sound. Therewas a clarity to the sound that had not been there before. I washearing things that I had heard before, but instead of them beingslightly fuzzy or blurred, they were now clear and distinct. Iplayed all four sides of the two LP album. On every cut I washearing clearly things that I had heard before, but hadn\'t realizedhow veiled or obscured they had been. Amazing. The next LP on theplatter was Nirvana Unplugged in New York. This is an album I take with me to the audio shows. I know it verywell. Again I was hearing details I had not heard before. What was mostnoticeable was the subtle changing of the textures of Kurt Cobain\'svoice. This was not something that I had really noticed before. Now thechanges in texture were perfectly clear. Next up was the 45rpm reissueof Louis Armstrong\'s St. James Infirmary. I\'veplayed this LP many, many times. Again I was hearing subtle littledetails that I had not heard before. I spent the rest of theafternoon playing album after album. Classical, rock, pop-it didnot matter what the genre was. The sound was always clearer withmore subtle detail. This new bearing really works.linkto the full review
