I would love to find this special guitar a good home. It is a 1937 D-28 Martin with Herringbone trim. This guitar belonged to my late brother, Mike Clark, a respected musician in the Oklahoma City area. It has a beautiful, full tone and does a wonderful job over a microphone, both onstage and in the recording studio. It has a wonderful action and is a joy to play. I wish I could keep it forever, but I must let it go at this time.
In the early 1980’s, master luthier Don Teeter, performed a beautiful restoration on this guitar. A letter of authenticity, written and signed by Don’s hand is included with the guitar. He details how he contacted his good friend Mike Longworth at Martin, who was able to send him a period correct 1930’s Red Spruce top to use on this instrument! He also tells of using the exact bracing pattern from Lester Flatt’s old Herringbone that Don actually sold to Lester. The letter is an interesting document showing the love and care that was put into the restoration of the guitar.
The guitar shows some natural wear since the restoration. The top has darkened nicely and would be hard to tell from the original. Let me add, there are absolutely no cracks in the top andany cracks in the sides and back, as well as, any other issues were addressed by Mr. Teeter at the time of the restoration. It is as solid as a rock and sings like a bird!
In completely original condition, a D-28 of this vintage could command a price well over $100,000.
I am setting arelatively low reserve to allow serious players, as well as, collectors to have an opportunity to own this fine, rare instrument. I will allow the buyer a 48-hour approval period to fall in love the excellent tone and playability.
I will not ship my brother’s guitar out of the United States, please don’t ask. It ships in a Deluxe Brown C. F. Martin case and will be professionally packed. Local pickup is also an option. Serious buyers, please contact me and I will do my best to answer any questions. Bobby Clark 615-337-6755
Good luck and God bless.
