This is a German manufactured scope Goerz Certar 2 1/2 power scope that I believe dates to around or before WWI complete with double claw scope mounts AND bases for a 98 Mauser rifle. You can see the same model scope pictured on page 42 of Peter Senich's book The German Sniper. These mounts and bases are the classic German Suhler style used on sporting rifles and adapted for sniping during WWI and WW2. The scope is in great shape with excellent clear optics and great lenses, no rust or pitting on anything. The elevation dial and windage adjustment in the rear mount work great. Mounts lock into the bases tight. The post and sidebar crosshair do look a bit wonky - look to have been fixed or adjusted in the past but they work just fine. The rear base fits a military 98 with the stripper clip hump intact - I have left the small amount of Acraglas on the rear base where it had been molded onto my rifle in the past. Scope clears a military 98k bent bolt handle - which is not true for all of these mounts, and the bases are low and relieved so that you can still use the open sights on your rifle. Scope does NOT say made in Germany - there are no markings on the side of the elevation wheel - the only marking is on the occular bell - rears CERTAR 2 1/2. Scope and rings are 22 mm tube - so if you were looking for mounts and bases for a Zeiss Zielklein - these mounts can be changed over because they are not soldered in place. Also, because the mounts can be moved on the scope you can place this on a Yugo M48 or other shorter action 98 Mauser variant.
everything you need to make a sniper rifle, or to complete a classic Mauser
sporter yourself. The bases can be
screwed or soldered in place, but what I have done with another scope is to use Brownells
acraglas (dyed black) to attach the bases.
This method holds without problems under recoil, and the mounts can be
removed with a low heat (propane torch) without any damage to blue of gun. In this way you can do it yourself in one
weekend, and restore the gun to orig. condition any time you want. I have shot hundreds of rounds through my guns
in all temperatures, and it has never moved (19 years and going for one gun),
and I have upgraded bases twice on another gun without problems. If you follow how much claw bases go for,
and how hard (and expensive) it can be for someone to hand-fit them to your
scope/mount, you will realize the full value here. Check out the photos- actual combat photos
show that this double clawwas a very common setup used by Heer and SS
troops. I can tell you that shooting your military 98 with an original vintage scope and mount setup is a fun experience and really lets you get the accuracy it's capable of - especially if you eyes no longer love the open sights as much anymore.
