Wilhelm Leopold Colmar, Baron von der Goltz (1843-1916) served as commander in chief of Turkish forces in Mesopotamia and successfully conducted the siege of the Anglo-Indian force in Kut.

Born on 12 August 1843 near Labiau in East Prussia Goltz joined the German army in 1861. In a widely varied career Goltz served as soldier, military lecturer (at Berlin from 1878-83) and writer (publishing The Nation in Arms in 1883) before becoming, in June 1883, military advisor to the Turkish army while still a Major.

Tasked with the modernization of the Turkish army Goltz was so successful that it required the intervention of the major European powers to call a halt to the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 which Turkish forces appeared to be on the verge of winning.

Goltz was despatched back to Turkey in November 1914, becoming aide-de-camp to Sultan Mehmed V.

Handed command of the Turkish First (Bosporus) Army in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) following a power struggle with Liman von Saunders, Goltz proved unpopular with Turkish War Minister Enver Pasha. Goltz\'s plans for a large-scale attack upon the British in Egypt or India therefore found little favor. He was subsequently appointed to command of Sixth Army in October 1915, heralding a much-desired return to regular soldering.

Goltz successfully halted Sir Charles Townshend\'s Anglo-Indian army among the ancient ruins of Ctesiphon on 22 November 1915. The following month, on 8 December, Goltz followed up this success by penning Townshend\'s force at Kut. Having then repulsed the large British force despatched to relieve Townshend Goltz conducted the 143-day siege of Kut which finally ended with Townshend\'s surrender on 29 April 1916.

However Goltz never lived to savour his victory: he died ten days earlier of Typhus, although rumours persisted (unproven) that he was actually poisoned by a group of Young Turk officers.

Sultan Mehmed V

Sultan Mehmed V (1844-1918) served as Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918.

In November 1914, Turkey entered the First World War on the side of the Central Powers. Once in the Sultan, as Caliph, called upon all Muslims - with a notable eye upon those living in Allied countries - to rally to the Ottoman cause on 14 November 1914. The Germans, in particular, were most disappointed at the ineffectual results.

Mehmed died on 3 July 1918 in Constantinople at the age of 73. His reign had sadly presided over the effective dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire. Within six months of his death Constantinople itself fell under Allied TO THE CRITTENDEN SCHMITT ARCHIVES ON LINE MUSEUM AND DEACQUSITION SALE. THE ITEMS IN OUR REFERENCE COLLECTION DATE BACK TO ABOUT 1849 WHEN MY GREAT UNCLE, RALPH CRITTENDEN AND HIS PARTNER RICHARD TIBBALS CREATED THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL AMMUNITION FACTORY IN THE UNITED STATES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF DRAWN CARTRIDGES , PERCUSSION CAPS AND ALL FORMS TO AMMUNITION OF INTEREST TO THE GUN MANUFACTURING FACTORS OF THE DAY. SPENCER , SHARPS , HENRY , VOLCANIC, JENNINGS, REMINGTON, AND SMITH AND WESSON ALL SOLD CRITTENDEN AND TIBBALS AMMUNITION UNDER THEIR OWN TRADE NAME. THE UNION ARMY BOUGHT MILLIONS OF CTM PERCUSSION CAPS AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF SPENCER CARTRIDGES DURING LINCOLN’S WAR AND ALL OF THE SPENCER AMMUNITION USED IS THE FIRST MAJOR BATTLES INCLUDING GETTYSBURGH WERE ALL MADE BY CRITTENDEN AND TIBBALS.

**Over the course of the next couple of years we will be offering for sale thousands of rare specimens of museum quality many of which have never been offered for sale before and which you will likely never see for sale again. Why are we selling this archive and reference collection? After 150+ years of interest in ammunition there is no one else interested in the field in our family. My personal collecting has spanned 50 years and I am at an age when it is time to stop and pass on such activities to others.
