ANTIQUE GIBSON H1 MANDOLA - SERIAL # 78261
Thisextraordinary instrumentwas produced in Kalamazoo, MI. The serial number is hand written in pencil and the patent dates are February 1, 1898 and March 30, 1906. Research indicates that it is from the Loar Period and was producedaround 1924.
The front is black, I believe black spruce. It is ivoroid-bound with pearl dotmarker fingerboard inlays. "The Gibson" is engraved on the tailpiece and silkscreened in gold on the headstock. It has an adjustable bridge and two rings of marquetry around the soundhole.
It is in near perfect condition, with just a few marks caused by the pickguard, which is missing. There is a line in the finish which runs up the center of the back. I have tried to show these in pictures #10 and #11. No work has ever been done on this instrument.
This incredibly beautiful instrument belonged to my Greek Grandfather and has always been in our family. It was played on rare occasions by musicians who lauded the rich deep tones. For those unfamiliar with the Mandola, it is tuned a fifth down from the mandolin - CGDA.
While I have done my best to photograph, the pictures do not do justice. Please don't hesitate to ask questions and more photos can be produced if required.
