Glass Magic Lantern Slide ABIEL ABBOT LOW MOTOR BOAT C1902 NEW YORK TO ENGLAND
AN INCREDIBLY RARE IMAGE, I HAVE ONLY FOUND TWO IMAGES OF THIS BOAT, BOTH IN THE TATE IN LONDON, BOTH OF FAR LOWER QUALITY THAN THIS ONE.
Captain W C Newman sailed from College Point NY at 11.25am on July 9th 1902 in the 38\' Abiel Abbot Low to demostrate to the world the reliability of her 10hp kerosene engine.
She was then the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic on her own bottom power. The Abiel Abbot Low was a wooden double-ender. She had high freeboard and a low cabintop. The cockpit was small but completely open. She had two short masts and enough sail to enable her to make port downwind if necessary.
The journey took 37 days and the Captain was accompanied by his son who was 16 at the time ... an incredible journey
