This is the authentic original 2nd printing of the famous "Skull and Roses" or "Skeleton And Roses" poster for the Grateful Dead. It advertises the Family Dog sponsored concerts at the Avalon Ballroom San Francisco on September 16th and 17th 1966. This famous design by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley was the first time the Grateful Dead used the skull or skeleton; and, it was adapted by the group for use in many of their album covers and posters.
This, the very rare original 2nd printing, measures 20" X 14 1/4". Printed on the lower left is "26 (2) Family Dog Productions 1966". The 26 (2) verifies it is the 2nd printing. Above this, in the edge of the print is "Mouse / Studios . 66".
As you can see this is in very good condition. The poster is clear and the colors are bright. There are 4 thumb tack holes from mounting, the lower right has a tear around the imprint. Foxing is just beginning on the lower left corner, the only place it touches the print is in the border. My framer tells me this can be cleaned and it's definitely time for it to be properly framed. The back is clean except at the very bottom edge where the foxing is starting.
This comes from the estate of a very wealthy patron of the arts. Who knew this elegant lady had such a fun past? You might enjoy viewing her 1968 Big Sur Folk Festival poster also on sale at this time.
