Up for sale is an early,
handmade Dave Guardala Michael Brecker I mouthpiece for tenor sax, priced to sell and .
inscribed on the shank with a D over a G
and MB 1877 or 1879 (the dotted script is notoriously difficult to read). The
original silver plating is intact except where worn off by the ligature and by
the reed. The tip, table, rails and the characteristic pink tooth plate are
perfect. The baffle has the characteristic slant file marks made by Dave
Guardala when he finished the mouthpiece. This, and the specific tip opening,
characteristic for the Michael Brecker I model, indicates a mouthpiece which
has not been modified, although I cannot guarantee, as I am not the original owner.
The tip opening is .108” same as Otto Link 7*
- 8, but much easier to play. Guardala constructed this mouthpiece, based on
Dukoff’s style, but modified it so as to be very easy to blow because Michael
Brecker had a physical problem in his neck which demanded that he avoided high
pressure when blowing.
Contrary to many of the later Guardala
models, this mouthpiece is not a screamer but has a dark, husky sound with lots
of character. It is very flexible. You can whisper and you can wail. From the lowest tones to the highest altissimo. The Guardala is really the Ferrari of saxophone mouthpieces.
It comes with a vintage Bari soprano ligature
made of heavy white fabric, which in my opinion works much better than an
original metal ligature. In addition it does not harm the silver plating.
It becomes more and more
difficult to find one of these much desired mouthpieces. Further, Dave Guardala
never licensed the blueprint for the MBI to be used for laser
trimmed copies. Grasp the chance now and own a piece of saxophone history,
which also is a joy to play.
Why do I sell this
masterpiece ? First, I never could acommodate to metal mouthpieces, second, I
get closer to my tone ideal with the Brilhart Tonalin Streamline I play, and right now, I could use the money.
