H.W. Hawes bamboo fly rod:
$450.00

This is a 9\' three piece one tip Hawes bamboo fly rod.Serial number A256.According the Hawes records it was shipped to Abercrombie and Fitch in March 1917.It was sold as a\"Trout Fly Rod\" at 9 ft., 4 7/8 oz.(Thanks Dana)Wow almost 100 years old.Delicate slide band reel seat and tapered Hawes grip.Casting a 4-5 weight to my preference. The butt ferrule is 16/64 and the tip ferrule is 10/64.
The original brass capped bamboo tip tube has a crack in it from drying out, but functions fine. The rod bag holds the tip tube, the butt and the mid. The rod bag is in excellent condition.A metal non original champion style tube also will be shipped with the rodto protects all items.
There is only one tip and it is short 1 inch. The mid and butt are full length.Ferrules are snug and pop upon separation..I believe the mid ferrule has been reset at some time. The witness marks have been moved and the pins have not been put back in.There are also four of the guides that are replacements. The original guides are left hand (english) and the 4 replaced guides are right hand. The the right hand guides have windings of a different color than the originals. There are 3 guides on the mid that are replacements and one on the butt. The butt also has a wire stripping guide. I assume that was the way it came, either way that is what is on the rod.The rod looks to have had a varnish over coat at one time.
These delicate rods (wands) are extremely difficult to find in any condition. No matter what your collecting taste, having a Hawes rod in your collection is a great pleasure.I have enjoyed showing it to my friends just the way it is for over 20 years.
Use it as it is, or restore it. As the new owner, you are in charge of its destiny.
If you have questions I have not anticipated, please feel free to ask. I will try to get back as soon as I can and add your question to the listing.
I have listed the rod for $700. That was a fair price at the time I bought it.I am not sure what is a reasonable price in todays market. If it is low buy it, if not, please feel free to make an offer.I collected for 20 or so years and just \"finding a Hawes to view\" was difficult. Buying them was even more so. Even with the advent of the internet there are few for sale.
Enjoy the photos.
Regards. Jim
