Heathkit IT-28 Capacitor Checker - Nice! - HAM
This is a nice Heathkit model IT-28 capacitance bridge and leakage checker, plus resistance bridge and inductance comparator bridge. Except for color, the IT-28 is identical to the Heath IT-11. This instrument uses the same bridge circuit as the venerable Heathkit C-1, C-2 and C-3 meters, but adds an amplifier that significantly increases the sensitivity of the bridge. The IT-28 also uses more modern, accurate, and stable reference components in the bridge circuit. All the bridge elements in this instrument were checked for accuracy and found to be well within their original specifications, and this instrument is working properly on all ranges. It is shown in the second photo measuring the value of a (nominal) .021 uF polystyrene capacitor from my "junk box." My eyeball says about 0.215 uF. My fancy digital meter reads it as exactly that value.
But measurement accuracy isn't the real reason for having one of these unique instruments. Read IT-28 leakage circuit tests capacitors for leakage at their rated voltage, up to 600 VDC. This is great for finding those capacitors that measure OK on a modern capacitor meter, but just don't work right in tube-type circuits with their higher voltages. It also measures the power factor of electrolytic capacitors - another valuable test for the technician who has power supply problems. This test serves the same purpose as a modern ESR meter. The instrument can also be used as a re-former for old electrolytic capacitors. It's great for saving those older capacitors that you just can't replace. Just leave your capacitor in the Leakage test mode until the eye opens!
My personal experience is that the Heath IT-28 is uncanny in finding bad capacitors that other testers miss. The bad ones just won't open the eye, even when they measure fine with my other meters; or they will show leakage at the higher test voltages that the other meters just don't have. A tester like this is a real necessity if you work with older radios, TVs or HAM transmitters. I keep one on my bench and wouldn't be without it.
This instrument is in very nice condition with only a few small scratches and blemishes - most of which are visible in the photos. The eye is bright and the chassis is free of damage. It ships with a set of short test leads suitable for use with this instrument and a clean reprint of the operating and maintenance sections of the manual, including the schematic diagram. Only the detailed construction steps have been omitted.
If you like to work with vintage or other high voltage electronic equipment, you really need one of these fine instruments!

My name is John. I'm not a professional seller, just a retired electronics engineer selling off my collection of electronic equipment acquired over the last half century. Some of the kit items I built myself back in the mid '50s. Newer items I acquired as I needed them for my work and hobbies. A few older items I bought on just for the joy of fixing them up and seeing the vacuum tubes glow again. Most all the items I'm selling are in good working condition. The few that aren't will be plainly stated as such. All items will be accurately described to the best of my ability. These are not collector items, just good working tools that have lots of useful life left in them. They are sold as-is, but will leave my possession carefully packed and in the condition stated. I look forward to your business. Good luck with your offerding!
