This sale is for a beautiful vintage Chinese celadon & blue bulbous porcelain vase. The ground is a beautiful celadon color with blue & white Foo Lions playing ball in the clouds. Foo Lions are also called ShiShi and Foo Dogs. There are four adult Foo Lions decorated on the vase and a baby Foo Lion on the back of the mother. The auspicious Foo Dogs are playing ball in the clouds with a ball that has meaning as a Buddhist precious object. The details in the decoration are very vivid & beautiful. The substantial vase is 16 3/4\" tall and weighs 9 pounds 6 ounces. The celadon vase is unmarked but was sold to me as Republic Era (1912 - 1949). The workmanship is excellent and the lovely celadon vase will be an anchor piece in acollection of Asian arts & antiques.
Foo Lions represent lions in old Imperial China and are often shown in Chinese art. They are guardians of the home, palaces, tombs and other structures. They represent strong protectors & defenders in Feng Shui. They are very popular in Chinese art and are often called \"foo dogs\" in western cultures where they are also very popular. A lovely vintage Chinese carved wood display stand is included in the sale but is not original to the foo dog vase. The stand has a dark stain and rests on four feet that scroll under. The stand is sturdy enough to hold the weight of the foo vase. The stand is in excellent vintage condition with expected wear. There are rubs, scratches, a few small nicks and some variation in the stain. There are no chips, cracks, missing pieces, repair or damage to the stand. There is an old tag on the bottom which I have not removed.
The large celadon Foo Dog vase is in excellent vintage condition with expected normal wear. There are a few common characteristics of old porcelain such as tiny bumps which occurred during the making and are not defects. There are no other chips, cracks, repairs or damage.
