History: From the John Deere CollectorsGuide - \"For well overtwo decades, while John Deere engineers developed a full lineof row-croptractors and their variations, the \"D\" was carrying the loadin ricecountry and wheatland. By the mid-40s, it was a much-changedtractor from theoriginal “D”—mounted on rubber in the early 30s; styled in1939; drawbarhorsepower increased to 24.02 in 1935, 30.46 in 1940. Butwheatland farmerswere growing larger, too, and demanding a standard tractorwith even more powerthan the later models of the \"D\".
Coincidentally,a newfuel was becoming increasingly popular for industrial uses:Diesel. And dieselengine technology was reducing the disadvantages which hadslowed the adoptionof diesel power for agricultural tractors. In the early yearsof World War IIJohn Deere engineers began designing a standard tractor toreplace the\"D\". Two of their goals were: (1) more power, and (2) a dieselengine. By 1949, they had realized both objectives in theModel \"R\".
The\"R\" had agasoline-fueled auxiliary starting engine, which eased twoproblems that hadplagued earlier diesels. While others were started with theoperator standingon the ground manually turning a flywheel, the \"R\" was startedwiththe operator seated, pulling a lever. While others were slowto warm up,starting-engine heat enhanced warmup of the \"R\" for a faststart onthe day\'s work, even in cold weather. The \"R\" boasted manyotherfeatures pioneered on John Deere Tractors, of course. And the\"R\" hadpower--more power than any tractor John Deere hadmanufactured. It was rated at34.27 drawbar hp and 43.32 belt hp.\"
