Item Description: This is an original and old Japanese army officers heirloom sword in Shin Gunto mountings from World War 2. The blade and fittings are in Project condition. It has a deep curvature and a blade length of 26.25 inches (67cm). The hada looks to be itame hada and the hamon looks to be gunome. Traces of both can be seen but at some point the blade was dipped in a kind of acid or chrome. What remains shows the features of the blade underneath the new outer layer. The tang is mumei, or unsigned, with three mekugi-ana, or pegholes. Based on the shape and workmanship that can be seen, the blade looks to be late koto, ca. 1500, likely from Mino province.

The mountings are Type 98 Shin Gunto and in Project condition. The tsuka is present but is missing all of its adornments including fuchi, kabutogane, menuki, and tsuka-ito. The tsuba is also not present. The saya (scabbard) is brown painted metal with a complete leather cover over the saya. The leather cover is tightly in place and not removable without damaging it. This would leave behind what is likely an excellent condition saya with little or no missing paint. The leather cover is in excellent condition with supple leather, few tears, and no missing stitches. The blade is in Project condition. There are no nicks and no rust. There do not appear to be any major flaws like hagire. It is possible this blade could be polished to restore the expected finish but it would be a project. Overall, I think this piece would be a nice pick-up for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
