As a retired broadcast engineer who has been restoring Kenwood/Yaesu 70\'s and 80\'s series of HF transceivers for many years, I find the one component that deteriorates with time are the electrolytic capacitors.The HV power supply capacitors are under particular stress due to the approximately 900 volts applied to them. If these capacitors fail, there is a good chance of loosing the HV rectifiers in the process and the possibility of a power transformer going with them.

For those restoring radios, given the originalcapacitors are now between 25 and 35 years old, changing them now will likely keep these radio\'sgoing for a long time to come.

The replacement capacitors are brand newmade by Nichicon, rated at105 deg. C and are 180uf at 500volts. These capacitors are 35mm in diameter, so fit the originalmounting clamps perfectly.

The Kenwood kits also include two 470k1 watt bleeder/equalizer resistors (500v rating)and two .01uf/1kV ceramic capacitors to completely renew the HV section.

These capacitors are 80% higher invalue than the originals, which will \"stiffen\" the HV power supply and consequently provide sligthly higher peakoutput power due reduced sag in high voltage on voice peaks.HVcapacitors are wired in series, so 180uf/500v capacitors will result in 90uf at 1000V, which is a significant increase over the originals which only provide 50uf at 1000V.
