Really nice transit, serial number 73385, which dates it to probably 1940 or 1941. Telescope measures approximately 11\" long. Model number stated on the box is Y5160F is highly unusual. We have a subscription to antique website, and between that and googling around, despite many examples of K&S transits, I simply cannot find another example of a K&S transit whose model number starts with a letter, and I could only find one other example of a transit whose model number ends with a letter. Also unusual is the brass compass which is marketed as a Young & Sons model on the graphics. My best guess is that K&S were trying to play up their earlier purchase of highly regarded Young & Sons by including a really nice, retro looking (even for 1941) brass compass and, accordingly, used a \"Y\" in the model number for \"Young\". But this is just a guess which may or may not have any truth, but, either way, brass compass contrasted with black makes this model a looker.
Telescope is nice, I see no clouding or fungus or internal dirt. Levels all work with no cracks (I don\'t even see scratching). Telescope focus works smoothly and evenly. All the adjustments move smoothly and work (not really sure what one one on bottom does though, but it turns smoothly). No yellowing discoloration to white background on compass. I see no scratching on glass covering compass in this light. Box has wear and imperfections (more so than transit) and there are areas of wear and imperfections on transit (please see pics).
Transit is in relatively nice physical used condition, has some writing etched in brass, including the letters \"OSU,\" which almost certainly means it was owned by the local university, Ohio State University, or someone associated with it. Says \"cleaned 11-15-54\" on a tag and inside there is paper mentioning \"B.K. Elliot Company\" and \"Transit and level repairing.\" Leather carrying strap is solid and not rotted.
My suspicion is that transit was used for something associated with university, properly maintained and then stored in antique friendly environment for the past 60 years, as evidenced by lack of dry rot to leather carrying strap, lack of rust and lack of discoloration to brass.
Please see photos for more information and feel free to correct or add to any observations or assumptions I\'ve made. Everything pictured is included, including plastic cover and spotting level in case. Lens cap is included.
