Up for sale today is the Lionel #1872 - "The General" steam engine and tender. This engine was made famous by James J. Andrews and a group of Union spies who stole it in an effort to burn bridges and tunnels between Atlanta and Chattanooga. "The General" became famous following the release of the 1956 Disney movie.
This engine was offered as a super O version during 1959-1962. This version has an operating headlight, magnetraction, three position E unit, and a powerful smoke unit that produces volumes of smoke (see pictures). The engine runs great and changes direction smoothly.
The engine and tender have minor playwear. There is a small chip on the front cow catcher and a chip on the tender edge (see photos). They are small and barely noticeable when the engine is running. The engine needs the decorative piping on the cab roof leading to the sand dome. The pipingis available at any parts supplier.
This engine and tender grade C-6.
This is your chance to own a very desirable Lionel engine that is a model of the full size General which is on display at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia.
