OUR GRADING SYSTEM: An amalgamation of grading systems from multiple sale houses, and grading services such as PSA in California, plus over 30 years of my buying at sale and shows. Highest to Lowest:
10= GEM-MINT, OR MINT+ (LOOKS FACTORY FRESH, NO FLAWS)
9= MINT, IS EXTREMELY HIGH-GRADE, BUT DUE TO ITEM BEING OVER 50 YEARS OLD, SHOWS AGE IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, SUCH AS MUTED LUSTER, OR A RUB ON THE ITEM, AS BY TRUCKS RUBBING AGAINST PLASTIC, OR A MINUTE SCRATCH FROM SOMEONE TAKING IT OUT OF THE BOX, ETC.
8= MINT-(MINUS), IS LESS THAN MINT. AT FIRST APPEARANCE IT IS MINT, BUT UNDER CLOSE EXAMINATION, THERE ARE A FEW MORE RUBS, MINUTE SCRATCHES, ETC. MOST DEALERS AT SHOWS, WOULD CALL THIS TYPE OF AN ITEM MINT, DUE TO THE AGE OF THE PIECE. TRAINS ON A FEW OCCASIONS MIGHT HAVE A TEST RUN LINE ON WHEELS, EMAIL TO ASK IF THIS BOTHERS YOU, BEFORE offerDING. THANK YOU. EVERYTHING HAS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION, INCLUDING THE AGE FACTOR.
7=NEAR-MINT, SOME SCRATCHES, RUBS, MAYBE A CRIMP OR TWO SHOWING MINOR PLAYTIME, BUT STILL VERY HIGH GRADE ITEM. AGAIN, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE AGE OF THE PIECE, IT MIGHT HAVE MINUTE AREAS OF OXIDATION. THIS IS STILL A VERY HIGH-GRADE PIECE.
6=NEAR-MINT-/EXCELLENT+, BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE PIECE YOU SEE AT SHOWS. HAS SOME SCRATCHES, MAYBE A MINUTE INDENTATION, MAYBE A RUB HERE OR THERE. PIECE IS STILL ALL ORIGINAL, WITH NO REPAINTING. THERE MAY BE AREAS OF OXIDATION OR FLAKING. THESE YOU WOULD FIND AT SHOWS.
5=EXCELLENT, IS THE AVERAGE PIECE THAT YOU WOULD FIND AT A SHOW. THERE MIGHT BE SCRATCHES, RUBS, OR MINUTE INDENTATIONS; OR MIGHT ALSO HAVE SOME LIGHTCORROSION. PIECE MUST BE ALL ORIGINAL, WITH NO REPAINTING.
4=EXCELLENT/VG, IS BASICALLY THE SAME AS A 5, EXCEPT IT MIGHT HAVE HEAVIER CORROSION SPOTS OR DEEPER RUST. AGAIN, THIS IS WHAT YOU WOULD FIND AT A SHOW. STILL A NICE ANTIQUE PIECE.
3=VG OR VERY GOOD, THIS WOULD HAVE SCRATCHES, DENTS, HEAVY CORROSION OR RUST IN MANY SPOTS. THESE TYPES OF GRADED ITEMS ARE USUALLY GROUPED TOGETHER AT AN sale. ALSO MIGHT HAVE SOME REPAIR OR TOUCHUP. THESE STILL MAKE A VERY NICE ANTIQUE FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES, OR TO START A COLLECTION.
2=FAIR OR GOOD, THIS WOULD BE THE SAME AS A 3, EXCEPT IT MIGHT ALSO HAVE SOME REPLACED PARTS, AND A GREAT DEAL OF RUST.
SOME DEALERS USE THESE FOR PARTS.
1=POOR, TOO MANY PROBLEMS, JUST USE THIS TYPE OF AN ITEM FOR PARTS.
***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE INCLUSION OF THE ORIGINAL BOX WOULD INCREASE THE GRADE BY ½ TO A WHOLE GRADING POINT. OBVIOUSLY THE ORIGINAL BOXES ARE VERY RARE.
THIS GRADING SYSTEM HAS BEEN AROUND FOR AT LEAST 12 YEARS NOW, AND IS USED FOR BASEBALL CARDS, ANTIQUE TOYS, COMICS, ANTIQUE GLASSWARE, ART, AND ANTIQUE COLLECTIBLES OF ALL SORTS.
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU, AS I HAVE GRADED MANY COLLECTIONS, AND HAVE HELPED MANY sale HOUSES WITH THEIR GRADINGS.
This is my grading system, not someone else’s, so if you disagree, ask questions, before you offer, so we can clarify the grading.
If you still do not understand the grading system, kindly email me before you offer, and I will gladly answer your questions, before you offer. We go out of our way to make sure you have all of the information you need to offer.
I TRY TO BUY ONLY THE HIGHEST QUALITY THAT I CAN FIND! Thank you and happy offerding!
PLEASE BE VERY REALISTIC WITH YOUR offerDING! THIS IS A DESIRABLE AND HARD TO FIND PIECE! I HAVE SET THE RESERVE AT A PRICE THAT IS BELOW MARKET VALUE, AND BELOW A PRICE THAT YOU WOULD PAY AT A LIVE sale, OR A COLLECTOR SHOW, OR A PRIVATE SALE. BUT AGAIN, IT IS A REALISTIC RESERVE PRICE SHOWING THE ITEMS QUALITY AND LATEST VALUE, NOT A 3 YEAR OLD BOOK VALUE! ALL CONTENTS OF THE LISTING IS SOLELY THE OPINION OF THE LISTER. THANK YOU AND HAPPY offerDING!
On Oct-21-11 at 08:37:09 PDT, seller added the following information:
IF YOU LOOK AT THE PHOTOS, ANY BRIGHT SILVER OR CHROME SPOT, SOMETIMES LOOKS GOLDEN. THIS IS NOT RUST OR CORROSION. THE CHROME IS SO CLEAN AND BRIGHT, THAT WHEN THE CAMERA FLASH GOES OFF, IT BOUNCES BACK AS YELLOW. THAT IS BECAUSE THE FLASH HAS A YELLOW GLOW, AND THE CROME IS AS BRIGHT AS A MIRROR.
REMEMBER, NO RUST OR CORROSION!
