LIETZ Co. FORESTER\'S SURVEYOR\'S VERNIER COMPASS WITH A JACOB\'S STAFF, ADAPTER AND CASE

+++++++

For the discriminating collector or experienced forester, surveyor we have a fine old Lietz Company, San Francisco vernier compass with its appropriate accessories. The compass is in extremely fine condition and measures 4\" in diameter with a 4\" needle that can be set by a thumb set nut on the reverse and 4\" offset sights. A permanently mounted circular spirit level on the compass face allows fast easy leveling. A set screw on the side allows you to set the declination.

This fine instrument is meant to be used with a Jacob\'s staff and we have anice one that has always been with it. It measures 53 1/2\" Made of maple, the top has been turned to a perfect cone which accepts the compass\'s ball joint adapter. At it\'s base is a pointed forged steel cone shoe. One of the things that really sets this staff, and the instrument itself, is the fact that it has a carved signature of its noted owner - C.R. Fritschle - and the date 1920. Charles Russell Fritschle,was born November 24, 1894, in Kirkwood, Missouri . Charles attended the University of Missouri and served in the 10th Engineers (Forestry),Company \"E\",ExpeditionaryForce in France induring World War I. ( it make one almost wonder if these tools saw service at the Marne, Belleau Wood or some other senseless battlefield most Americans had never even heard of ).He was a forester for theState of Missouri and it\'s Forestry Department at the University of Missouri.On October 5, 1944, in St. Louis, hemarried Lila Harrison and died on March 1, 1992, in St. Louis. A collection of his and his family\'s papers are in the Fritschle collection at the Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis.

This exceptional staff compass collection is completed by its original leather strapped carrying case with separate compartments for the compass and its staff adapter. The case is in very good condition with no leather rot or damage of any kind.

C.R. Fritschle and the Fritschle family were well known in Missouri and I\'m sure with a some more digging additional biographical information can be found.

Shippingfor this compass andthe staff will be in two separate boxes and insurance will be necessary depending upon the final price. Shipping is from the beautiful Boonslick Area of Central Missouri.

Good luck- I hope that you get it!
