Sword bayonet for use with the 8mm. M1886 Lebel rifle. Known affectionately as “Rosalie” to French troops, the M1886 was the French mainstay during WWI and saw extensive use worldwide by native troops in the French colonies. The M1886 introduced the distinctive cruciform blade, which remained a feature of most French bayonets until 1956. The scabbard and bayonet have matching numbers (M40499) on the crosspiece and (K40499) on the scabbard. I do not see any other markings so can\'t say where it was made.This is an example that escaped later modifications, retaining its long blade, and press stud. The down side is the rust on the scabbard and quillion and the slightest of curves in the blade about 4-5\" from the tip. I have not tried to treat the rust. Figured I would leave that to a new owner. Buyer to pay shipping costs via FEDEX or USPS. All sales are final for this item.
