Mining~ 1890s~Stamped \"Atha\" Miners 4lb.Singlejack Drilling Hammer & Drill & Pad:
$35.00

This is a very early three piece set of c1890s \"MINERS 4 LB. SINGLEJACK DRILLING HAMMER ~ HAND DRILL ~ DRILLING PAD\" The Atha Singlejack is boldly stamped with their logo of a horseshoe with the letter \"A\" and \"ATHA #4\" The Atha Tool Co. was located in Newark, New Jersey from 1884-1913 and made Blacksmithing tools, hammers, mining tools, railroad tools and stoneworking tools. I only find \"ATHA\" stamped tools in early 1880s-1890s mines and this pair was found deep underground inthe abandoned 1890s mine you see in my photo and hasn\'t seen light in over 120 years.. These 4 lb. Singlejack Drilling Hammers with the tapered ends are unique to mining and are very rare and they are what the miners used to drill the dynamite holes along with the steel octagon hand drills. Every miner had to own his own singlejack hammer whereas the doublejack hammers were owned by the mining company\'s.. The steel octagon Hand Drill is 11\" long with a flat chisel end. The original Drilling Pad is 4\"X 6\"and very rare.. When hand drilling shafts, the miner used water in the hole to keep the dust and rock chips from packing in the hole. This rare shaft drilling pad is made out of thick heavy canvas andwas a unique to mining tool used to deflect water from splashing up every time the miner hit the drill. It is also used while drilling up in a vertical raise to deflect rock chips. Canvaswas used because it holds it\'s shape and stays on the drill during the drilling process. This Singlejack Hammer, Hand Drill and Drilling Padrepresents the earliest tools of early 1890s underground mining. If you want to own a full set of really early underground miners tools, thesethree are cool..Good Luck
