Made for the US Military by Cargocaire Engineering Corporation, Amesbury MA.
About ten years ago when I was in the saw-milling business I searched high and low for a better, more energy efficient way of drying green lumber, when I happened to run across these. We had previously purchased and tested numerous different brands of dehumidifiers, including some that were sold for, and specifically designed to dry green lumber in a kiln room, but no matter which brand, model or size we tried, the electric bills ate up almost all our profits! I knew there had to be a better way.
ORIGIN: I ran across an sale where the US Navy was selling off all of their decommissioned dehumidifiers removed from our fleet of nuclear subs. You know these just had to cost the government a small fortune when new. We only needed three we but had to buy 24 of them all in one group. Over the years I have sold off all but one of the 12 of the smaller ones. You may recall seeing these small ones (½ the size of these) listed for sale on last year. *A small one is shown in one pic just to show the size difference. I only have one of the smaller units left. I only have five or six of the giant units available. This listing is for ONE of the last remaining giant ones.
USES: Virtually any shop or business that has humidity problems can certainly benefit by having a monster like this on hand. I have sold these for use in woodworking shops, to the pharmaceutical industry, nutritional supplement manufacturing, commercial kitchens, and others. In fact, I just sold three of these to a company in Oregon that plans to use them to dry marijuana they grow! If you are tired of humidity problems here is your answer.
INDESTRUCTIBLE: These were designed for the military to run nearly silent, to grab the greatest amount of moisture out of the air and use the least amount of power to do so. They are nearly indestructible, come with a very detailed operator / service manual with exploded view diagrams and detailed parts lists and fold-out wiringschematicdiagrams. The manual even includes the sources for every part, from the various suppliers toCargocaire- with their part numbers!!! I doubt you could ever wear one out. They are designed to run 24/7 forever.
OPERATION: These dehumidifiers use NO REFRIGERATION condensers. Instead, there are two barrels, each about 50 gallon size, filled withdesiccantmaterial that absorbs the moisture out of the air that passes through. A sensor detects when thedesiccantis saturated and then kicks on heaters which drive off the captured moisture to the outdoors. Other than hooking it up to power, you only need to run the one discharge pipe and a second 4\"- 6\" PVC pipe outdoors for a return air.
HOW THEY WORK: Room air is drawn into the machine and is passed through the desiccant in just one barrel, then back into the room. When sensors detect the desiccant is saturated, the incoming air is then diverted over to the second barrel - while heaters in the first barrel drive out all the collected moisture. One barrel is constantly absorbing moisture even while the other barrel is discharging! The barrels switch back and forth automatically.
CAPACITY:The higher the humidity in your shop, the more gallons-per-hour they will collect and discharge. These work best under a heavy humidity load such as 75%-100%. Each of our 20\' x 38\' (760 sf) home-built kiln rooms holds approximately 24,000 board feet of wet, green, 5/4, 8/4 and 12/4 lumber. We found that, if left on 24/7, just one of these units will easily dehumidify two kiln rooms FULL and dry the lumber down to 6%-8% moisture content in less than a week!!! Of course, drying that quickly will damage good hardwoods so, using the built-in timers, we ran ours only 3 hours each day for 30 days. Basically, all you need is a couple of fans to circulate air around the kiln room and a good dehumidifier to make great lumber that will sell 10x faster and for 2x-3x the price.
MONEY-MAKER! We dropped our cost of drying green lumber from more than 38¢ per bf to under 6¢ bf just by switching to these monsters. At 11¢ kWh energy costs they paid for themselves in just two batches!!!
ADVANTAGES: These dehumidifiers can dry lumber for pennies-on-the-dollar compared to any other make, model or brand I have ever seen. How people can make a decent profit by drying wood any other way still remains a mystery to me. The energy consumption for these units is a tiny fraction of all other brands, including the much smaller units we tested.
NOTHING ELSE TO BUY: The desiccant lasts for decades so there are not any maintenance costs or consumables to buy. Almost nothing to break or wear out. They will run for decades without any repairs. All parts are readily available, most are off-the-shelf. Other than suppling power to the unit and running ductwork (if needed), there is not much else to do. You can set these up inside your building or outside and duct it in.
ENERGY REQUIREMENTS:208v - 230v 3-phase, 60cycle. Total connected load 20kW.Much of the time the energy use is negligible. Only when the heaters kick on to discharge the moisture does the unit consume much power.
INTERNAL FANS:1250 cubic feet per minute.
WEIGHT: Approximately 3,300 lbs.
CONSTRUCTION: I believe most all parts of these units are 316 stainless.
SIZE: These are approximately 90\" long x 42\" deep x 60\" tall.
DESICCANTCAPACITY: Two 28\" x 48\" barrels - each approximately 4,229ci.
FREE SHIPPING: To any business address in the lower 48 states.
