• You are offerding on a museum quality antique cameo of Terpsichore, the Muse of Dance, circa 1840-1860.

• This is one of a collection of cameos found in an old box, in the drawer of an 18th century French writing desk. This is a unique treasure, hidden away in the desk for over 60 years! • This antique cameo is mounted in a heavy 14k gold bezel. The gold is not marked but has been tested to be 14k. The hand carved shell cameo is very unusual as itdepicts Terpsichore, the Muse of Dance & Choral Singing. The carving is highly detailed with a crown of laurels, lyre, roses, the draping of her hair & soft facial features. On the back of the cameo there is acircular clasp pin closure.

• This an antique cameo, not a modern shell, glass or plastic reproduction.

• The oval shell cameo measures approx. 1 5/8\" tall by approx. 1 1/4\" wide. With the frame, it measures approx. 1 7/8\" tall by 1 1/2\" wide.

• This item is an estate piece and it is in excellent condition for its age.There is some wear consistent with the hand carved material and the age & use of this antique piece, such as some open areas near the top edge. We believethis very old cameo has been refitted in this Victorian gold frame/bezel, which is common with cameos of this age. The pin back is fully functional and has had a brace put in on the back right side, there are two notches on the frame near the brace.This is us nitpicking, we are simply trying to be as specific as possible for our customers. We would remind buyers that this piece is very rare, few examples of antique carved shell cameos survive due to the fragility of the natural material and carving. As usual, we have left the piece in its original condition and will let the new owners clean it if they choose to do so. Please use the zoom tool on the photos provided to inspect the item.
