The function of a ballast is to convert the electricity from yourhousehold outletinto a form in which the High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamp needs to operate. You need a timer to grow your plants properly. Plants need a "rest" stage during vegetative growth and need aspecific "dark" period for proper flowering. We recommend you grow your plants vegetatively with 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness. Most day sensitive flowering plants will need 12 hours of darkness a day to initiate flowering / budding / fruiting.
