Here is a BIG ANTIQUE NAVAJO RUG FROM ABOUT 1890 (1910-1930), HAND WOVEN WITH RESERVATION HAND SPUN, CARDED AND DYED WOOLS. This blanket is hand woven from hand spun and hand carded beautiful Churro Sheep Wools - the shades of black, grey, and white, are made from hand spun and carded natural Churro Sheep Wools. The red wools are hand spun and hand dyed wools, with the Aniline Dyes obtained from the Trading Posts of the time. The BLUE is most likely Natural INDIGO Dye used in early Navajo Weavings. The blue/purple color is hard to see in the pics but it is blue (looks grayish in pics), and a brilliant blue/purple if you scratch the surface. Note the many Lazy Lines within this weaving, as well as the beautiful variegation and landscape lines resulting from many small batches of hand spun and carded Churro Wools.
THIS IS A LARGE BLANKET - The size of this textile is approximately 80\" X 55\",with a hand spunwool warp of about 8 (hand spun/carded wool warp), and a hand spun Wool Weft of about 20-22 - weft varies due to hand spun and carded wools (a well woven and very durable weave).Abeautifully designed and well constructed piece of NativeAmerica!CONDITION - GOOD For Age / Antique Weaving (Please see all pics!): The Churro Wools within this rug are in great condition (still have plenty of luster and sheen), NO Notable Stains, NO Fading, NO notable Bleeding of red dye (very minor). There is one hole, which you can see in the last pic, several of the warp threads are still intact so his is an easy fix (red wool can be laced between warp andweft), there are a few small frays and snags as well. There is some minor wear to edges. The End Selvage Cords are 95% present (with minor wear and 2\" break/loss on one end), one end is ablackselvage and he other is a red/orangecombination). The Side Selvage Cords are worn but about 90% present, a twist of two, 2-ply brownto black wool yarns. There is a about an 8\" fray one one side with loss ofselvage and minor loss to weft. The corners have some minor wear but are in good condition overall and the corner ties are gone due to time/use (see pics for corners).
THIS IS A CLASSIC NAVAJO ANTIQUE TRANSITIONAL WEAVING WHICH IS WORTHY OF COMPLETERESTORATION,YET IT DISPLAYS VERY WELL AS IS - A UNIQUE AND TRULY CLASSIC NAVAJO DESIGN !
