This is an fine looking antique and classic Navajo KLAGETOH / GANADO Rug from about 1920 (1910-1930) - the pattern includes a central cross, contained within an elongated and elaborated diamond. An overall eye pleasing, symmetrically geometric and handsome pattern. This is a very old and authentic Navajo Rug from the Navajo Reservation, it has many traits of the old weavings such as Lazy Lines, wool batch changes, varigation of wool tone, and landscape lines within the hand spun and hand carded naturally colored wools.
This blanket is made from naturally spun and carded Churro Sheep Wools - a natural white/cream, brown and grey, as well as hand spun wools, that were hand dyed with an old Vegetal or Aniline Red Dye. Although this rug shows some wear and tear it is a Classic and Antique Navajo Rug. It is most likely Klagatoh / 'Klag' / Klagetoh Regional Rug, however it bears many Ganado Traits (i.e. cross and red dyes). During the late 1800's and into the early 1900's several of Regional / Trading Post areas were still evolving their styles and geographic boundaries, so it was not uncommon for neighboring Reservation Regional Areas to overlap in style and technique elements. This is a beautiful looking piece of Native America and a fine collectible worthy of complete restoration.
