LIONS THEGREATEST DRAG STRIP

Shipped directfrom the program’s producer/director, the 3-disk “Lions – The Greatest DragStrip” video (DVD) set is one of the most in-depth & widely solddrag racing documentaries, ever!

Finally, thecomplete trilogy is being offered at a greatly reduced price over retail(nearly half), but only for a limited time.

This is part one(of the 3 part) quintessential video documentary on the sport of drag racing\'smost historic quarter-mile facilities, Lions Drag Strip. Veteranphotojournalist Don Gillespie took six years to compile hundreds of photos, films, research, and interviews from more than 30 individuals. The nearlytwo-hour (1-HR, 54 MINS) production (in DVD) details the Long Beach/Wilmington,Calif. track\'s inception in 1955 (w/Mickey Thompson its 1st manager). Lions wasthe first to use electronic starting lights, was LA-based resulting in giantcrowds, and played host to some of the largest meets in history, especially ata time when the sport was in its early, pioneering stages. A must have for allwho raced or attended an event there, or simply ever heard about arguably themost mystic of all drag race facilities. A definite keeper for lovers ofnostalgia who long for a well-done trip back to racing\'s yesteryear. Incrediblefilm footage includes the first-ever \"live\" TV broadcast on KTTV,including interviews with racers Allen \"Lefty\" Mudersbach, JackChrisman, Tom McEwen, Don Prudhomme, with Thompson and Bill Welch as emcees.

Part Two/1962-\'66

Part Two picksup speed in 1962, when nitro cars returned after a 5-year fuel ban. The (1-HR,40-MINS) presentation concludes near the end of \'66, with explosive growth indragsters, supercharged coupes, early funny cars, etc. In 1962 newly formed7-second dragster teams included Greer-Black-Prudhomme, plus TV Tommy Ivo,among more than two-dozen interviewees. Roland Leong recounts his accident inthe Hawaiian. Don Garlits recalls a colorful match race involving ChrisKaramesines. Rick Stewart, shown in a breath-taking finish line crash, recountswaking up in the hospital as the Watts Riots began. Wild Willie Borsch explainshow he drove his fuel altered using one hand. Appearances include McEwen, JohnForce, Gene Mooneyham, Larry Sutton, C.J. Hart, Ed Iskenderian, Ralph Guldahl,Jr., Don Prieto, Dave Wallace, Pat Foster, Paula Murphy, Ronnie Rapp, DaleArmstrong, Chris Karamesines, etc. Top Fuel dragsters reached 200 MPH. Matchrace draws included the Willys coupes of Stone-Woods-Cook vs. Big John Mazmanian, stands packed to capacity. Stockers evolved into altered wheelbase machines;carbs to injectors, gas to nitro, then blowers as funny cars were born. Alsoemerging were streamliners, exhibition cars, jr. fuelers, gas and fuelaltereds, motorcycles, etc. Thompson’s departure saw C.J. Pappy Hart take over, who promptly ended NHRA sanction. Epic, rival AHRA dual stocker/dragsterchampionships took place, plus the racer-formed UDRA held a series of events ofsimilar national caliber.

Part 3/1967-\'72

Third and finalepisode (1-HR, 40-MIN) features 40-plus interviews with top pioneers, including; Garlits, Iskenderian, Hayden Proffitt, Gas Ronda, Bill MaverickGolden, Robert Balogh, Carl Olson, Sush Matsubara, McEwen, Foster, Ivo, DalePulde, Don Long, Hart, Sutton, etc. Begins with nitro racing’s version of aheavyweight bout, as Top Fuel dragsters fight the growing trend of AFX andearly Funny Cars. Huge meets ensued. Funny Cars roared into the 7-second zone.Top Fuelers blazed past 220 miles-per-hour. With increased performance camedanger. Straining clutches and superchargers resulted in spectacular fires,wheel-stands and crashes. One dramatic segment depicts the AHRA Grand Americanin early 1970, when Top Fuel legend Big Daddy Don Garlits lost part of hisright foot in a horrific starting line transmission explosion. Graphic film ofthe accident surfaced only recently. Garlits recounts the incident, plus hisstunning return months later with a rear-engine dragster that changed the sportforever. Weekly campaigners included Jr. Fuel and Gas Dragsters, GasSupercharged, Fuel Altered, Injected Funny Cars, plus wild exhibition vehicles.Manager C.J. Hart departed in 1971, replaced by innovator, Steve Evans, whoswitched from AHRA to NHRA sanction, and produced the giant Grand Premier, which saw the track’s largest number of incidents. When noise complaintsspelled the end in December 1972, Lions held the racing equivalent ofWoodstock, with The Last Drag Race, a colossal, fitting, yet tear-filled end toone of the sport’s most historic, and revered tracks.
