This started out as a 150 year old butternut walnut tree, until it began leaning after a wind stormand finally had to be cut down. I couldn\'t stand the thought of turning it into fire wood, so I asked my father-in-law to make boards out of it. The first few board he made using a chainsaw, which ended up being very thick and rough. I have been holding onto this board for over 6 years because I didn\'t want to hassle with all of the sanding involved in getting it smooth. I finally decided to go ahead and do it. It took me a very long time to get all of the chainsaw marks out of it, but it was worth it! The wood is beautiful!
I painted lettering on the board using black acrylic paint. I also painted a crow flying at the top right, and a pentagram surrounded by barbed wire at the bottom left.
After painting, Isealed it with several layers of polyurethane. The board measures 24-24.5\" across, 2\" thickand14-18\"high. It is alarge, heavyOuija board.
The pointer or planchette is the most unique one I have ever made. I actually didn\'t even have to make it. I was walking around on our property and found an old burl from an alder tree. A burl is a spot on a tree that used to have a limb or where the tree got damaged. My husband must have cut this off of a tree a while ago, because it was laying on the ground. I picked it up, and there was already a hole from where the tree limb used to be hooked to the tree. All I did was saw the burl in half to make both sides flat, then sanded the edges to smooth out any rough spots. Then, I epoxied 3 vintage aqua blue crystal cabochons on the back for easy sliding across the board. This is an absolutely unique and beautiful planchette!
I know this board will be active because of the energy trapped in the wood from the old tree. You can feel it just touching the board. My in-laws have some very old pictures given to them by the great grandchildren of the family that homesteaded the property, and the tree is in some of the pictures. It is big, even back in the early 1900\'s! I included a photo of the tree from 1934 next to the same tree in the 1990\'s.
