Pine devil and skull mask from Michoacan, Mexico: $91.00
Death and devils are two of the most famous and important themes in Mexican masks, and they are often combined into a single visage as upon this handsomely carved piece. A serpent representing both native fecundity and Christian temptation runs along the devil\'s sneering half, and yet the prominent horn appears on the skull side. This stained pine wood mask was purchased at the market of Tzintzuntzan, one of the oldest P\'urhépecha communities around Michoacan\'s Lake Pátzcuaro. It comes from Santa Clara del Cobre, a historic town south of the lake. (Wood glue had already been applied to a split toward the bottom of the mask\'s interior before purchase. It does not appear from the front.) 7\" wide x 8-1/2\" tall x 5-3/4\" deep (without horn).8-1/2\" wide x 8-1/2\" tall x 6\" deep (with horn). Feathered Serpent Imports offers colorful Mexican folk art and ritual supplies. Many are bought directly from indigenous artists to promote fair trade. Unique, handmade pieces represent Mexico\'s rich cultural diversity.
