RARE 1862 CONFEDERATE CSA CIVIL WAR LETTER CAMP PETERSBURG VA 26TH NC REG.:
You are offerding on a Rare 1862 Confederate civil war letter and envelope.This 6 page letter is in great shape for its age.No rips,tears or silverfish damage to letter. The envelope has some staining,edge tear and silverfish damage. The envelope is not postmarked . Letter is from a soldier S.W. Brewer who was in the 26th NC regiment August 20th, 1862 in Petersburg, Virginia. Letter is addressed to the sheriff of Chatham County,North Carolina.Letter talks about being well now but still very weak.I have been sick going on 5 weeks.I am near More's Hotel and will stay here until I am fit for duty.If anyone wants to see me I am at More's Banks street opposite the daily express office.The troops have all left here and gone to Northern Valleys of Va.Our regiment pass thru this town yesterday for Stonewall Jackson.I went to see the company before they left.They were so glad to see me they broke ranks and was all around me.I offer them farewell probably for the last time before the rising of the sun next Sunday that they will be many one on the battle field lying cold and will fill a soldiers grave with the war cloak around them.The boats has all left the river and gone to where all the troops are.I paid the doctor my bill yesterday he charge me $65 and if were a $100 I would not thought hard of him as I think he saved my life.Col. Vance came to my tent and told me anything in the world that he could do for me would be a pleasure to him and he told me any where I wanted to go he would send me.Closes by saying I will write you my farewell letter when I leave petersburg as it will be very uncertain about me getting back. Interesting letter and a great piece of North Carolina Civil war history.
