RARE PAIR CIVIL WAR ERA CAVALRY GAUNTLETS GLOVES C 1864:
$719

This is a rare pair of all-original Civil War Period leather gauntlets. The gauntlets have allthe construction and material characteristics of Civil War era manufacture, from the soft, buff-coloredleather to the intricate stitching and white kid-skin lining. The identification of the original wearer (George Davis) is penciledon the inside of each long gauntlet cuff.

The inscribed name of the original wearer, George Davis, has an unclear middle initial that I believe is an "R." That being the case, research shows that Major George R. Davis (1840-1899) was born in Palmer, Massachusetts and entered theUnion Army inJuly 1862 and served as captain in the Eighth Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He later served asa major in the Third Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteer Cavalry. This regiment was attached to Defenses of New Orleans (Department of the Gulf) from March 1864 toNovember 1865. Since the gauntlets were recently acquired from a family estate in Rhode Island, they likely may havebelonged to Major George R. Davis.

The gauntletsmeasure 13 inches in length and are 6 inches wide at the end of the cuffs. They are in good condition for their age and use. They area bit stiff from decades of storage and have some staining as shown in the images. One gauntlet has a one inch long breakin the leather on the underside. These items do not detract from theirwonderful eye appeal; they aresolid at the seams with a charm and look of originality that comes only with actual period use. Examples of the type may be seen in the most prestigious collections to include the Gettysburg Visitors Center and Museum of the Confederacy collections. This pair will be a superb addition to a cavalry officer's uniform display orany Civil War mounted grouping.
