Vintage 1949, Railroad Engineer, Conductor, Brakeman Hat. Made in the U. S. A. Circa 1949!

Big Smith brand - Large 7 3/8 -New, old stock from a vintage hardware store in Kansas City

Hello Railroad fans! Offered for your viewing, and hopefully buying pleasure, is this vintage 1949, Big Smith, Union Made R. R. Hat, one of many which were discovered over a decade ago in the loft of an old, closedhardware store in Kansas City, Missouri, in the original boxes. These hats were still boxed in their original packaging from the Big Smith factory, circa 1949. This is the last hat that I have, which I was keeping for a rainy day. Well, it's raining today! Originally, I had over 4 dozen of these hats, which I either gave to friends and relatives or soldover the years. I was involved with historical railroading, restoration and living history, but am no longer doing that due to physical limitations. These hats were perfect for our crew members, and once the word got out, my stock was depleted quickly to crewmen on other lines, who wanted an authentic look. This hat was just stored away, because it was the last one. Hat isas new, never worn, no damage, no odors, no fading; just about as perfect as can be. I do have one other that I wore, but I won't sell that one.

If youexamine the photo of theUnion Made tag,you will see to the right of the sewing machine, the copywright date of 1949. This doesn't necessarily mean that it was made in the exact year 1949, but if not, it was probably fairly close to that. The size tag, 7 3/8, is also still present, with just a bit of yellowing from age. Imagine that! It's rare to find these older, U. S. A. made railroad hats, especially in as new condition, and in this larger size! The hat is a gray herringbone pattern, made of cotton, with a very long visor, which was intended to keep cinders from the the steam locomotives, out of the engineeer's and crewmen's eyes. The cotton was Sanforized, to provide a more durable and longer lasting garment. The crown is high, and has the steel grommeted air vents on the side.BTW: This is a sized hat (7 3/8), and not one of those newer, adjustalbesize hats, that endup looking like a clown hat!The Big Smith textile company andwork clothing business was around for a long time, and made high quality clothing for various industries. Their line of coveralls, shirts, jackets, kerchiefs, and headwear was very popular with railroaders. Kansas City, MO. had large stockyards and of course large railroad yards, so I'm sure the hardware store which sold these hats, had a lot of railroaders for customers. I guess I better stop; or I'll start telling my old railroad stories from days gone by! Very nice hat! Great for historical railroader! I have another U. S. made cotton, railroadhat on now, but it's not vintage. Check it out, please.

Be assured that you are dealing witha reputableand fair seller. Check my 100% positive response and 5 Star, Detailed Seller Ratings.

Shipping is $6.00,by Priority Mail, to any U. S. A. destination, packaged very carefully. I ship very quickly - Same or next business day!
