Rare 1916 Vinyage Kirchhof blue tin penny whistle Saxaflute Boys & Girls EUC This rare vintage lithographed blue tin whistle is printed, \"Kirchhof, New Jersey, Made in USA\" along the seam in the back of this 13-3/4\" recorder type instrument decorated with a lyre and geometric designs. Penny whistles were so called because at the time of great popularity, when they were inexpensively mass produced mid-19th century, even children could afford one. Charles Kirchhof started his company in 1852 specializing in small metal toys, noisemakers, and Christmas tree candle holders. Naming his whistle, \"Saxaflute\", Kirchhof manufactured this with a wooden fipple in the long tin tube above the six finger holes, similar to the English flute or recorder, making it easy to play. The company was still recorded as being active up to the 1950s. The early 20th century instrument was a toy, and has seen a bit of paint loss and scratches and one small dent, but is still in good condition with only slight oxidation.
