Aspirators were used to draw out and remove substances from the bodysuch as mucus, serum and infections. A trocar is inserted into the body,allowing a cannula, a tube used for drainage, to be inserted. The cannula isattached to the screw-operated piston by rubber tubes. The handle of the pumpis then pulled up, sucking out the substances. However, aspirators declined in use with the rise ofaseptic surgical techniques. Georges Dieulafoy (1839-1911), a French physicianand pathologist, invented this type of aspirator in 1869.
