Rare - Complete Vintage Apothecary Scale by CENCO = Central Scientific Company.
This is a great antique science instrument.
It is a CENCO, Central Scientific Co., Antique Balance ScaleThe main body being made out of cast iron.It is also referred to as: an \'equal arm scale\' used by doctors, pharmacists, and chemists.It is in excellent condition. It includes the original plumb-bob in the back.This scale is stamped number \'362\' on the top of the beam.Additionally, it has the post and adjustable tray for holding the weights or other items. The vertical tray holders are brass, as are most of the adjustment screws and the balance beam.The trays are aluminum and do show some wear, but could be cleaned up.There are screws on the bottom of the iron base for additional adjustments for balancing.This scale is very heavy due to the cast iron construction. The Central Scientific Company was founded in 1900 in downtown Chicago.It was formed out of what was left of the Olmstad Scientific Company.Central Scientific manufactured and distributed science teaching equipment for schools, colleges, and universities by catalog mail order.The trademark \"CENCO\" was used from 1909 onwards. CENCO dominated the field of selling science education equipment through their mail order catalogs. These analytical scales are characterized by their delicate central beam and small pans, usually made of glass or brass.In order to attain maximum accuracy, great pains were taken to lessen the friction of the hinges.Sometimes these scales are built into a box, which incorporated a level and screws for finetuning.They were kept in a glass case, since their accuracy was easily affected by dust and moisture, when originally used.
