LYMAN Windgauge Target Front Sight No. 7
Here is a very nice and extremely rare LYMAN globe style front sight patented Jan. 8, 1899 and last cataloged in 1929. It was a Winchester factory option for the Models 1885, 1886, 1892, and 1894 rifles, and mounts directly into the factory 3/8" dovetail. Stamped on the top of the globe is 'LYMAN, REG. US PAT. OF.' Windage is readily adjusted by turning the flat operating handle on the side of the sight, which moves the entire globe assembly left or right. The setting is locked by folding the handle down against the base. This sight also has a reversible reticle allowing you to tip either the aperture or the 'pinhead' post into position. This is an excellent sight for precision shooting when used in combination with a rear tang aperture sight.
You will see people listing sights on as 'Rare', which as near as I can tell means 'Can't buy it at WalMart'. In contrast, I call this sight rare because it's the only one I've ever seen with my own eyes, and only second one I've seen listed on in the past eight years.
Condition is very good for a sight that likely is more than 100 years old.I'm basing my age guess on the fact that this sight was on a 95% condition 38-55 caliber Winchester 1894 made before 1910.Blue is still good in protected areas, and the globe has the patina you often see on guns of this same vintage. Please see the pictures. The sight is fully functional, and there are no significant signs of distress from improper installation or removal. The windage adjustment turns easily, and the aperture and pinhead posts tip up great, neither too loose nor too tight.
I list stuff on for fun, to pass along nice parts left over from tinkering with my gun collection. I figure this sight ought to be in the possession of someone who has better use for it, as I don't use tang sights on my old Winchesters, and I'm not going to be doing any precision shooting with my old 38-55. If this sight doesn't meet your expectations, let me know right away and I'll refund your offer amount when I receive the returned item in good shape.
I'll gladly answer questions as time permits. Happy shooting!
