Rare VIRGIL EARP Tombstone Arizona Indians Battle Pre O.K. Corral 1881 Newspaper:
$32.00

Rare VIRGIL EARP Tombstone Arizona Indians Battle Pre O.K. Corral 1881 Newspaper (Note: additional images are located below the description) Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: THE JOURNAL, Evansville, Indiana, October 6, 1881

* Virgil Earp - Deputy U.S. Marshall
* Just prior to gunfight at the O.K. Corral
* Tombstone, Arizona

Page 2 has an article headed: "In Arizona" "Rumors Of A Fight With Hostiles Near Tombstone". The report mentions in part: "...A Tombstone dispatch: Two men came in from the Mary mine on the summit of the Dragoon mountains, about 16 miles northeast of Tombstone, and report a battle being fought...could not see that either side getting the better of the other...some soldiers & Indians mounted couriers have been sent to the mining and hay camps east of Tombstone to notify the men of danger. Mayor Clum and the Chief of Police are now raising a company of men to go and intercept the Indians if they go south". Though his name is not mentioned here, the chief of police at the time was indeed Virgil Earp.

It is very rare to find mention of the Earps in period newspapers, particularly outside of reports concerning the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which incidentally happened less than 3 weeks after this date. The presumption is that this is reference to Virgil Earp, who was City Marshall at this time, although the article aludes to the "Chief of Police". And the mentioned John Clum, mayor of Tombstone, was also publisher of the famous newspaper "Tombstone Epitaph"

Complete in four pages, various margin tears and wear, should be handled with care.
