This is the perfect block to build your 350,383,396,400, or 406 engine for street or strip use. A factory oem stockstyle block pales in comparison to the Bowtie block. The high performanceBowtie block superior in every way possible. These blocks are rough-bored to 3.98, and can easily be bored upto 4.185, and this still allows room for cylinder cleanup ofup to30thous. if ever needed. When bored to up to4.185 the cylinder walls are still approx. 2.45 thick. Theyhave a thicker deck than standard GM blocks. This block is fully adaptablefor replacement of an oem stock block.These have the one pc. rear main seal design, and is a very desirable upgrade from thetwo pc. rear main sealblock.Part number for this block is 10051183 GM rates the bore max very conservatively. We are 100% confident that the bore diameter on these blocks can be taken to 4.185 without an issue, and still have comfortable room for cleanup should you ever need. We are selling these blocks at a cost far below retail,about halfof what you would see them listed for at suppliers such as GM,Summit or Jegs. These blocks are brand new, factory sealed in the original crate straight from theGM Performance Division. We have obtained a limited supply of them. Rest assured there is nothing whatsoever wrong with these blocks. They are exactly as they should be, perfect in every way.We have already shipped several of theseto customers and many machine shops are buying them.
This updated design has a decidedly different appearance, but retains its original part number. New tooling procedures have significantly improved the quality and durability of this third-generation casting. This heavy-duty cast iron Bow Tie block has rough-bored 3.98" diameter cylinders. This block is recommended for maximum effort competition engines, as well as street/strip buildups. The deck surfaces are thicker than production blocks, and the head bolt holes are blind tapped to improve head gasket sealing, and allow a very thick amount of metal to remain near the deck, and cylinder bores. The main bearing bulkheads are .900" thick and the front and rear bulkheads are reinforced with strengthening ribs.The bulkhead areas, are considered the complete face of the front and back of the block. Regular oem style blocks are very thin in this area, and are prone to flexing or crackingunder load. The extra thick bulkhead areas in these blocks are what makes these blocks extremely durable in our opinion, as this was a weak area on standard oem GM blocks. These blocks all have the classic Bowtie logoembossed by GMon the side of the block.
The updated design on this Bow Tie block’s oil galleries now extend flush to the front and rear faces of the cylinder case. The revised Bow Tie block has a boss below the bell housing flange behind the #8 cylinder that can be drilled and tapped for lifter valley oil scavenging. The outer water jacket walls have bosses to allow coolant passages to be drilled between adjacent "siamesed" cylinders. Oil drain back holes in the lifter valley are drilled. The updated design provides more consistency in the thickness of the cylinder walls and water jackets. The "siamesed" cylinder bores have a nominal wall thickness of .340" at the casting parting line (measured 2" below the deck surface), but notice in the picture below that the thickness at the top of the cylinders is over half an inch thick. The blind tappedhead bolt holesallow this area to be very thick around the upper region of the cylinder wall. We are also told that the material these blocks are made of is much stronger than the oem standard block. Our machinist more or less verified this when honing and boring our test model.
Notice the cam circle are in the front of the block. No signs of offset as is usually the case in most oem stock blocks. When racers use an oem stock block, this is an area they are concerned about, as uneven cam circles are evidence of core shift in the block, and most oem GM blocks haveconsiderable amounts ofcoreshift in them.These blocks will not accept oem stock roller lifters. They will accept hyd. flat tappet lifters, or retro fit hyd. roller or solid lifters.
Technical Notes: Oil dipstick hole is not drilled and the lifter holes are bored to production diameter .842". 2-bolt main bearing caps are installed to simplify the installation of the heavy-duty steel main caps with splayed outer bolts.We do offer thisitem in various configurations, see our other listing.Bow Tie blocks are designed for standard, (350 mains)stylecrankshafts with 2.45" diameter main bearing journals. The Bow Tie casting block P/N10051183 is machined for a one-piece rear main bearing seal used on 1986 and later production small- block Chevrolet V8s. Crankshafts designed for two-piece rear main seals can be installed in Bow Tie blocks using crankshaft seal adapter P/N10051118. These blocks weigh 187 lbs. Yes you can use the seal adaptor to convert this block to accept a two pc. rear main seal crankshaft.
Worry not about the fact that these blocks are two bolt main, as the extra thick front and rear bulkheads on these blocks more than compensates for the lack of four bolt main caps in our opinion. The only instance that we can see that a splayed four bolt main would be needed, is for avery high level race engine, that turns above 7500 rpm or exceeds 575hp.The average street/strip engine would never come close to needinga four boltmain cap setup due to the fact this block has so many other strength factors over an oem block. The caps are also made from high strength nodular iron. The block material is also much stronger than oem style blocks. Our machinist made note of this when machining the cylinder walls on our company presidents 400cid engine. Just as all high performance blocks, these do require machine work before assembly. Nothing out of the ordinary. We offer this block fully machined ready for assembly, see our other listings.These are one pc. rear main seal design, and this we find to be superior to the early two pc. design. The nice thing about the one pc. rear main seal blocks, is that they are 100% compatible to the early two pc. style. They are able to live in the same place a two pc. once did. All mounting locations are the same. All acc. holes are for timing covers, etc. are in the same location. We know this to be a fact, as we sell the L31 short block engine, and it isa one pc. rear main seal design. One pc. rear main seal blocks are very resistant to leaking. As mentioned above, the bulkhead area is nearly one full inch thick. OEM stock blocks are a fraction of this. Pictured below is the what is considered the bulk head. You place your fingers on the front and backside of this area and feel the incredible difference from a stock block. This is the same on the back side of the block. When an engine is under load, the block tends to flex, and this virtually eliminates this. Those running a blower will find this block a must, as the thicker bulkhead in the front is very resistant to cracking.
Our company founder, Fred White is very familiar with the high performance Bowtie blocks made by GM. He has built hundreds of high performanceengines over the years using this type block.It is his opinion that this type block would last a lifetime if built to moderate levels and ran in a street rod. He claims the Bowtie blocks have addressed every issue that a standard block could encounter.
This block will accept any part such as crankshaft, heads, oil pan, that a standard GM 350/383 block will. Those wanting to build a 383 stroker engine will be pleased to know that the blocks are fully clearanced for a .3750 stroke crankshaft, andispossible tofurther clearance them to accept a 3.875 or4.00 stoke crank.If you already have a such a rotating assembly then you will not have a problem with clearancing. If you don't have a rotating assembly yet, then we suggest you take the engine bore up to 4.125 and build a 400cid engine, as they are superior to the 383 in our opinion. The only reason this can't be done with regular 350engines, is that the cylinder walls will not allow you to bore them anywhere close to 4.125. Boring to 4.125 or even 4.185is not an issue with our Bowtie block. When using a 383,(3.750 stroke)stroker crank, and boring to 4.125=400 cubic inches or taking the bore to 4.185 bore will give you a 406. If you already have a 383 rotating assembly, and want to usethis block, then you would bore it to 4.030, and you then have a 383We are in the process of dynoing our 400 engine built with one of these blocks. If all goes well, we will be marketing that engine package, as well as the rotating assemblies for those wanting to build their own.
Update on our400ciddyno results as of 10/25/08
We have completed our dyno testing on the 400cid engine using the Bowtie block, and our new fully cnc'd 220 heads, witha Howards 565/575 lift hydr. rollercam. This absolutly perfect combination made 535hp at 6100rpm with 500 pound feet of torque at 5000rpm. We were certainly not worried in the least about the Bowtie block, as our goal was to test out our new fully cnc'd heads and cam package. Every item we mounted on this block went on without any issues whatsoever. 535hp is far below this blocks handling capability. We are confident this block could easily handle 800hp or more. If you don't decide to use this block for your engine buildup, the only other alternative is using an oem GM block, and they are not even close in design, or durability compared to the GM Bowtie blocks.
The 400/406 buildupsare truly amazing in the way they perform. This is the perfect opportunity to have one, and ata price lower than you will ever find. This block is the best insurance you can have when building a street/strip engine that you want to last. It is not uncommon to see these blocks being used on engines with ratings in the 1000hp range. Imagine the durability you would have in an average street rod built to much lower hp levels. For the price we are offering these blocks for it certainly makes good sense to build your next engine with this block. The resale factor of your vehiclewould be increased dramatically with just the mention that you built your engine with a brand new Bowtie block. Bragging rights are well established.
In the picture below you can clearly see the half moon notches in the block to clear the head of the connecting rodcap screw . The opposite side of the cylinder is also clearenced, as this is the part of the block that usually interferes with the threaded end of the rod bolt. This clearancing is done by GM and normally cost around $125.00 at most machine shops. Another area that is clearanced are the pan rails, but notice in the picture below where we have pointed out. This may interfere slightly with some crankshafts. This spot can be ground to clear in less then five minutes with a hand held dremel tool. Most lightweight crankshafts will not interfere in this area at all. We have found that the Eagle H-beam rods clear these blocks. Be sure not to use rods from companies that are not sure if they are stroker clearanced. We do know that Eagle and Scat rods will clear this block when using a 3.750 stroke crank.

The machined version offered in our other listingswill be bored to desired specs, TORQUE PLATE HONED,(torque plate honing is veryimportant)lifter bores finish honed, mains will be line honed, as this creates a perfect balance between each main, oil dipstick hole will be drilled, and notched to accommodate billet style dipsticks, blocks will be completely cleaned, and oiled. The pan rail area mentioned above will also be notched, as some crankshafts cause need for this. This machine work willbe performed in house by some of what we consider the bestengine builders known. The blocks are in absolutely brand new condition, factory sealed in their original crate. When building ahigh performance383 engine from a 350 block as is common practice, you are no doubt putting tremendous strain on the block, not to mention the 30 over boring that compromises the cylinder walls. They tend to run hotter than normal, and have a shorter life than a stock 350. 40 or 60 over make the situation worse.The Bowtie block we are offering, is truly the way to go. The initial cost may be slightly higher, but you will not have any of the common issues associated with the 383. If your starting fresh and don't yet have a rotating assembly, then this would also be the perfect opportunity to move up to the much desired 400cid engine. The 400 operates much better than a 383, as it's bore to stroke ratio is what we consider the perfect combination for a street rod. The only reason you don't see many people running the 400 is that the blocks are very rare, and their reliability is questionable, but they do make are very good street/strip engine. The Bowtie block is the way to go. Paying nearly $2000.00 for one makes it costly, but you now have thechance to buy one formuch less.We are building about 10 400cid engines with them now, and willbuilda fewto very highperformance levels.
