This SPRING STEEL highly ductile sword blade is clearly the product of the sword and blade making center of Shotley Bridge, (Near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) Where the Hollow Sword Company, with imported Solingen blade-workers, started to produce the VERY BEST sword blades Britain had ever made Circa 1680
Although primarily intending to manufacture \"hollow blades\" (mechanically hollow-ground) for use in Small Swords, it seems that the majority of their production soon became \"Standard blades for Broadswords, Rapiers, HANGERS, and Bayonets\" ( Page # 21 \"Swords & Sword Makers of England & Scotland\" by Richard H. Bezdek)
I have included an image of an identical Gargoyle pommeled sword from (the late) George C. Neumann Collection in the VALLEY FORGE Museum, that shows identically shaped & fullered blade, exhibiting similar manufacture mark along with the \"SHOTLEY BRIDGE\" Running Fox logo motif (Differs from a Running WOLF, as it has the bushy-tail) SEE = Zygmunt S. Lenkiewicz \"1000 Marks of European Blademakers\", page # 63 and also Page # 81 for a similar \"Cross/double Cross\" mark attributed to Hounslow (London) which was famed for it\'s Hanger production around this time.
(George C. Neumann was the AUTHOR of \" Swords and Blades of the American Revolution \" my own 1st edition of this superb tome does NOT have a picture of this type of Hanger, which logically SHOULD have been included as is CERTAINLY \"period\" use-type weapon, he obviously was able to eventually acquire an example and it may well be featured in a later edition ?, that, sadly I do not have to-hand, but was found in Mr Bezdek\'s above mentioned reference)
BLADE LENGTH = 607 mm or 26.3\" and is superbly balanced, feeling very light-in-the-hand
Blade is very FIRM on it\'s hilt that displays an ancient peen-mark to the Gargoyle pommel, that looks like it has never been messed-with or disturbed in the three centuries since this sword was created
This sword has NOT been \"cleaned up\" and the lucky winning buyer may well be pleasantly surprised at the LACK of actual rust or any deep-pitting present
No scabbard
CONDITION = This is an antique sword in excellent condition for it\'s great age = 300 + years OLD.
There are some small chips to the cutting edge likely period-use marks. Much wear to the solid Brass hilt. Rust staining across much of both sides of the blade but little if any actual deep pitting. The condition is shown extremely clearly in the many images provided which ARE my condition description please do view all images carefully.
There are TWO HUGE Images down at the bottom of my listing that should show the sword on BOTH sides very much exactly as it is condition wise.
