SIGNED KENZAN JAPANESE POTTERY VASE Edo Period Museum Quality:
$45000.00

RARE & EXQUISITEANTIQUE JAPANESEENAMELED POTTERYVASE

Edo Period, SignedKenzan

Exquisite antique Japanesestoneware vase, withmagnificent hand painted floral design. The surface is rich with hand painted enamels, for which Kenzan wasdistinguished. Featuringbold, milky-white bottle gourd flowerswithgreen leaves and tendrils upon a deep black ground, the edgesfinished with iron oxide. The interior revealsfine buff clay under transparent glaze. Of traditional tsunodaru (sake cask) form, hand thrown andtastefully constructed. Signed on the underside, Kenzan, in underglaze iron oxide within the recessed and scalloped foot. We believe this piece is from the hand of either Ogata Shinsei (Kenzan I) or Ogata Ihachi (Kenzan II). In excellent antique condition, bearing just minor wear commensurate with age. We note a few scattered very small flea bites and age related crazing, both of which lend to a sublime patina. Upon close inspection, when held at the correct angle inbright light, there is also evidence of a very slight iridescence that has developed on the surface in places, which is indicative of the age (see photo #3). Please review all 12 photos with zoom feature for all of the superb detail. The vase measures approximately 9 5/8\"high and 5 1/2\" wide. Absolutelysuperb example ofmuseum quality Japanese pottery.Anexquisite centerpiece for the connoisseur of world class Japanese antiques and ceramics.
