SiS: EXCEPTIONAL BRIGHT RED TREE FERN Round - Colorful PSARONIUS - Log End Cut:
$19.89

This is an absolutelyexquisitely preservedtree fern round cut from theend of a really colorful, and uncommonlycolorful petrified tree fern log. It\'s a very nicely preserved Psaronius tree fern specimen with some very rich red and gold tones. The finish we\'ve achieved on this mirror polisheddisplay piecemust be seen to be believed. This piece is well preserved though the lighter area in the center is less so. The single fracture line is well stabilized and not in danger of breaking. The back is beautifully weathered and provides an amazing contrast to the mirror polished face. The colors are very nice but in person it\'s the mirror polish that first catches your eye and helps to reveal how rich the color really is in this ancient gem fossil. This log is agatized all the way to the edge of the rind and finished up very nicely!

Severalyears ago in Tucson I saw some fabulous petrified tree fern specimens the likes of which I\'d never laid eyes on. They were detailed, fascinating in their structure, and very colorful. They had the typical (poor) import polish on them, but I purchased several nearly complete specimens, brought them home and reworked them into truly beautiful collectibles. Since then, I\'ve tracked down the one miner who can legally export these fossils and visited his home and his claims in Brazil. The trip would leave me talking for days, but I\'ll leave that for our website. What you can see here is one of the world class tree fern specimens we imported as a result of that trip.

The entire adventure has been both fascinating and educational, and one of the true perks of having so many collectors to serve! I\'ve made some great new friends in the process and now have the chance to share the fruits of all this work with you collectors here on . One of the species of tree fern that I had never even seen until I was preparing to travel to Brazil has proven how incomplete the conflicting references on these rare and beautiful specimens are. It\'s a Psaronius that shows the distinct \"flat worm\" shaped interior xylem in the center, but there are multiple species of Psaronius identified (and new ones being proposed) and this one isn\'t quite like any of them. This really prettyred Psaronius is the most intensely colored specimen I\'ve cut in several years now, let alonepolished to provide to my fellow collectors! The quality of these well preserved and highly agatized specimens is unlike anything previously available! The porous grain pattern on the outside portion of the round is where the root mantle from the tree fern cannibalized the plant to raise it off the ground and create a trunk that brought the fern several meters off the ground! The interior vesicles make up the fern frond bases themselves. Together they form one of the most unique and beautiful fossil specimens you\'re likely to see and one of the newest and most exciting specimens now available to petrified wood collectors. The only thing that rivals the incredible detail in these ancient fossils is the colors that they\'re preserved in. This round exhibits reds so intense you\'d think it was painted! It\'s good agate too, particularly in the center, so it\'s polished up really nicely. We\'ve selected only the best specimens to prepare and bring to market and can guarantee each piece has been prepared with the same care and attention to detail that I put into the ones that remain in my own collection.

The fossils are reminiscent of petrified palm with a very interesting and usual \"heart\". The outer portion of the round looks a lot like palm wood with little rice grain like patterns uniformly distributed around it (this is the root mantle). The interior section is made up of a larger, less dense pattern where the heart appears to be made up of thick macaroni or brain shaped patterns (these are the bundled fern xylem and they have the most spectacularly beautiful honeycomb cell structure under a 10x loupe that you\'ve ever seen!). This fossil comes from the Tocantins state in Brazil. It\'s a Permian fossil which makes it about 1/4 of a Billion years old!

This log was preserved with exceptionally good quality agate that took a beautiful finish. It\'s preserved in a greater variety of colors than any other single log I\'ve cut or seen! By selecting the specimens myself, I was able to choose those that could be worked into the finest show case specimens. I\'ve cut, lapped and polished them on equipment I built myself to produce world class display specimens unlike anything you\'ll ever find in a retail shop. It takes a lot of dedication and attention to detail to produce real cabinet specimens worthy of a place in the finest petrified wood collections and at Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary, that\'s how we treat every piece we produce! Our finishes are second to none - really!!

This complete round is cut from the center of an uncommonlynice petrified tree fern log. It also has tons of fossil detail revealed in the mirror polished face. It\'s very solid and well preserved. If the timeless mystery of this piece isn\'t enough for you, then I\'m certain the simple, natural, gemmy beauty of it will be.

This piece measures about 7 1/2\" x 5 1/2\"acrossthe mirror polished face and is cut about 1.2\" thick. Weight is2.74 lbs.
