I inherited this and many other early Native American Pieces from a relative who worked as a Social Worker in the Southwest in the 1950\'s. This piece is a wonderful example of the craftmanship of a famous Santa Clara Potter - Maria Barbarita Naranjo. daughter of Pasquelita Tafoya. It is signed in script into the clay on the bottom \"Barbarita\" Santa Clara Pueblo. I do not have a date on it but it had to have been before or during the 1950\'s when she acquired it.
The design is the Avanyu - water serpent - it measures 2 1/2\" High, 2 1/4\" at the top and 9 1/2\" round at the widest. It has no cracks or chips that I can see. There is some surface scuff as it has been moved a number of time over the years. The designed of the Avanyu is carved with precision and there is a beautiful polish work by the artist.
