$2150.00

Extremely RARE and highly sought Moon Basket of Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma, Gosu Blue, Meiji Period, 1872-1880 SIGNED

MUSEUM PIECE

3 1/2\' x 3 1/2\' x 1 1/2\' (at widest)

This superb and extremely rare moon basket vase is an extraordinary example of Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma Gosu Blue porcelain. Using a wide palette of colors, and very generous use of Gold Glaze, this Mini Vase shows a bounty of purple and white wisteria on one side, and delicate pink and white chrysanthemums and birds on the other. An extraordinary museum piece.

I came to acquire this little treasure at a garage sale. I knew nothing about Japanese porcelain. I just found it very beautiful and very fine work. It was only upon masses of research that I came to discover what it was that I had purchased!

Corroborating photographs can be found with any search engine.

Some information:
Gosu Blue refers to the use of certain natural minerals and elements such as Cobalt or Asbolite to be used as the base for an under glaze or over glaze of the piece of pottery. Satsuma Pottery that has been decorated using the Gosu Blue techniques has a certain bluish hue to the images that are hand painted onto the surface of the pottery.

Gosu Blue Satsuma was produced in very limited quantity in Kyoto in the mid-19th century, and is now the most sought after of the Satsuma wares. Gosu Blue Satsuma Pottery is possibly the most popular type to own and therefore commands a higher price than other types of Japanese ceramics.

Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese ceramic pottery, also known as \'Satsuma porcelain\'. The term can be used to cover a variety of ceramics, but is often used to describe a style identified by its rich gold and polychrome decoration. The technique developed during the sixteenth century, following the Japanese invasion of the Korean Peninsula, when Korean potters were brought back to Japan to establish a pottery industry.

In 1873, the Meiji government sent a display of this ware to the Vienna International Exhibition, where it was awarded a prize. The family\'s ceramic ware was subsequently exhibited and recognized with awards at numerous International Exhibitions, including at Sydney (1879), Paris (1889) and Chicago (1893), among other exhibitions.

Please examine pictures carefully.

*There is a break in the vase at the top which does reduce its value. This has been reflected in the setting of the price. Otherwise, this piece is in superb condition for its age and lineage.
I will be happy to send more pictures including the picture with the small break.
