Superb Large J.B. Moore Historic Crystal Trading Post Navajo Rug, Excellent, c1905Back at the turn of the 20th Century, a Navajo weaver would have entered Crystal Trading Post and would have seen pictures hanging on the walls of rug examples that the owner, J.B. Moore, would have suggested as \"typical\" styles that would be attractive to the non-native marketplace (See last pic of 3 plates from his catalogue).
Serving as blueprints, these Navajo artists would interpret the designs found on these framed renderings in their own unique way, improvising as they saw fit. It is from this direct impression made on one Navajo woman over 100 years ago that gave birth to this piece.
This is an incredible synthesis of multiple rug designs in color, design and proportion. From The images in Plate III, among other things, she included the wonderful alternating arrowhead border and stacked rectangles. From PlateXIII she turned the central rectangle and hooked devices 90 degrees. And from PlateXIV she adopted this modified three-part \"airplane\" design. From other plates she picked up the inner hooked border, central cross, etc.
This is a visually dynamic rug that could be used as is for another 100 years as there is no thinness or fading. Consequently, there is also the strong option for investment by making mint as this is an heirloom piece worth thousands of dollars in the years to come.
The combination of being woven at the genesis of the Rug Period and its relationship to Crystal Trading Post makes this rug a rarity of American Indian Art.
