For sale is a used Tascam 388. I last used this item in 2002. Throughout it's life this unit has been kept indoors and well maintained. Everything was in good working order last time I used it. Once I moved into a small, one bed room apartment there just wasn't room for the 388. It has remained in the custom crate the movers built for it and stored in my parents basement all these years. As such, I'm selling it in "as-is" condition. Shipping cost is CONUS only. If someone really loves analog sound with DBX this unit is for you. Good luck offerding.

There have been a number of questions about this unit, so I though posting some additional info might be helpful.
I am the original owner. I bought this 388 new from Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in the Summer of 1988 for $3,000. I used it pretty regularly through 1996. From 1997-2002 my it saw very light, occasional use. Somewhere around 2000 I went to remix some material and there were occasional dropouts in it. I had the unit checked out by a Tascam authorized service center, and after a battery of tests they said it was in perfect working condition. I figured my tapes were/are old and possibly degraded. From what I read now, Ampex 456 doesn't last that long, and I was recording with tapes I purchased in the late 80s. I recorded some acoustic tracks with it in the late 90s and early 2000s and it was fine. 1996 was the last time I recorded a five-piece band, and it worked great at that time. Of course, it hasn't seen the light of day since October of 2002. I kept the heads clean and regularly de-gaussed in my day. As far as I know they are in good condition. Everything was in working order the last time I used it . From what I remember, it's possible that the lights for one or two of the analog meters are out (maybe channels 6 and 8).
